1) Analyse what the poem means

According to the Cambridge dictionary, language is a “system of communication” and communication is a form of expression of one’s thoughts, ideas or feelings. Hence, languages can be expressed in different ways ranging from speaking in different languages, writing, role playing, through art works, dancing, singing to doing science experiments. In the poem of the hundred languages, it was generally saying that children communicate their thoughts, play and express themselves in many different ways. They also have different ways of learning and exploring the things around them. Children have the capability to explore, create and imagine and have the potential to accomplish many things when given the right opportunity. However, adults sometimes limit the child’s learning when they get the children to think without letting them have “hands on moments” or just telling them to do something without explaining or getting them to think about the purpose of doing the activity. Hence, the poem is also trying to get readers to understand that children have the ability to construct their own learning even when they play or while exploring the environment around them.

2) Share how the hundred languages can be demonstrated differently through our objectives and practices for children

One topic in a lesson plan can have many different objectives and there can be many ways to meet the objectives. In the past, many preschools focus on doing worksheets to meet the objectives of the children’s learning. However, besides doing worksheets to assess the child’s learning, there are many other practices that can be used to teach the children so that they can meet their objectives. According to the Reggio Emilia approach, the child is an active learner in the environment and is capable of constructing their own learning. Hence, our objectives and practices for children can be met by following the child’s lead and interests and as teachers, we facilitate their learning by providing them with resources and opportunities to explore. Furthermore, the hundred languages can be demonstrated differently by giving children more hands-on experience and igniting their imagination through play based activities.
