Urbanisation - lynn

Urbanisation is the process by which an increasing number of people live in urban areas such as cities or towns. Large amounts of fossil fuels are burnt to provide energy for household activities in urban areas. These activities include heating, cooling, cooking, cooking and lighting. The high concentration of cars, buses and other forms of transportation in urban areas also contributes to the amount of greenhouse gases emitted in the areas. The 'greenhouse effect' is the warming of climate that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space. Certain gases in the atmosphere resemble glass in a greenhouse, allowing sunlight to pass into the 'greenhouse,' but blocking Earth's heat from escaping into space. Thus, increasing the temperature on 🌎🌍.

Deforestation is the loss of forests due to the removal or clearance of trees in forested areas. Trees are felled for materials such as, wood, paper and building materials. The area cleared will also be used for mining activities, grazing of animals, planting of crops and construction of infrastructure.

Impacts of Deforestation
-There are fewer trees and other plants to absorb carbon dioxide ,leading to an increase in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
-Carbon dioxide is also emitted during the process of deforestation and land clearance.
-Deforestation exposes soil to sunlight, increasing soil temperature and the rate of carbon oxidation in the soil. Carbon oxidation is a process by which carbon in the soil reacts with oxygen in the atmoy to produce carbon dioxide. This would then lead to the increasing rate at which carbon dioxide is released from the soil into the atmosphere.

Examples of deforestation are:
Brazil, deforestation of the Amazon rainforest

As population increases, the demand for the agricultural and industrial land also increases. Land is also converted to urban or built up areas as more people prefer to live in cities. The land use changes contributes to greenhouse gases as fossil fuels to be burnt to meet the energy demands of agriculture and an increase urban population. Some major fossils fuels include oil, coal and natural gas. Due to their high carbon content, fossil fuels contribute to the increase in greenhouse gases by producing large amounts of carbon dioxide when burnt.

- Definition:
The increase in the mean height of the sea's surface between high tide and low tide relative to land.

- Main causes:
1. Climate change leads to higher temperatures which causes the melting of glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica. Resultant meltwater causes a rise in the sea level
2. Higher temperatures in the atmosphere also causes water in seas and oceans to expand, increasing sea level.

- Negative impacts
1. Threatens low lying coastal areas and islands where over 600 million people are living in.
2. 33% of coastal land and wetland habitats are likely to be lost in the next 100 years if sea levels continue to rise at the current rates.

- Example
1. Generally areas near the coasts are more prone to the impacts of rising sea levels
2. Southeast Asia faces the most threat from rising sea levels followed by North America.
3. Least affected continent by rising sea levels is Africa.

Link to source

first strategy:
Singapore Green Plan 2012
-aimed to generate 60% of singapore’s needs using natural gas which is a cleaner form of energy by 2012
success
79% of singapore’s electricity was generated from natural gas
limitation
natural gas requires complex treatment plants to process and pipelines to transport. pipelines have high maintenance costs as they need to be laid underground and checked regularly to prevent any leakage
second strategy:
Green Mark Scheme (“green” buildings)
- Building Construction Authority (BCA) launched a scheme that allows buildings to be evaluated and certified according to the environmental friendliness and energy efficiency to be more energy efficient. Less energy used to provide the same service are more energy efficient. An example is Solar energy buildings that promotes energy conservation.
success
existing “green” buildings have reported energy savings of 15% to 35% compared to conventional buildings.
limitation
-construction companies and developers tend to be conservative about adopting new ideas and materials to build “green” buildings. “green” buildings are built in an environmentally friendly and resource-efficient way
- “green” buildings may cost more because the materials are expensive
third strategy: Plant-A-Tree Programmes

-successes: 60000 trees plated yearly thought singapore
- limitations: takes many years to mature so the positive effects my take time
