In September of 1957, nine black students decided to test the strength of the ruling decided on May 17, 1954 that stated segregation in schools was unconstitutional. The nine black students attempted to attend the first classes of the year at a formerly all white high school. On September 4th 1957, the group was denied entrance into the school by Arkansas' national guard, ordered by the states governor Orval Faubus. A few weeks later, President Eisenhower sent in federal troops to defend the students and allow them to attend class on September 25th.

In early 1965 Martin Luther King Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference made Selma. The focus of the march is to get black people registered to vote. When they started the march the police and people from the city created riots and killed some black people that marched. They marched around the clock for 3 days without stop until they reached Montgomery Alabama. The historic march and MLK's preparation in it greatly helped raise awareness for the difficulty black people had gone through in the southern states to be able to vote.
