The story is more of how the victims everyday life are different because of the villain less than trying to fight and overthrow the villain.
Items to discuss
-why isn't there more of a resistance to the Japanese/nazis?
-why do you think Africa was genocided
-what caused america to lose the war
-why hasn't frank gotten caught for being a jew
-what is the importance of the grasshopper lies heavy?
Focus of the week
-the focus of the week was character development. I saw development in joe when he started talking about his past, opening up lik he never did before. It gave us insight into what it was like in the past and gave us a look into what joe was like

                Questions
Do you think the Germans are killing off the smart people of the country?
                      Author
Philip K. Dick
                     Setting
The Japanese Pacific States (mostly San Francisco) and the Neutral Zone
            Key Characters
Frank Frink - Jew living in the Pacific States
Juliana Frink - ex-wife of Frank
Joe - in neutral zone with Juliana; currently reading The Grasshopper Lies Heavy, seems to support the Reich secretly when their leader dies
Mr. Tagomi - official of the Pacific States
Mr. Baynes- suspected spy and Jew; sells fake antiques
Mr. Childan - sells antiques from the pre-war era
                          Themes
Love - Frank Frink is still hungup over Juliana leaving him and sometimes confines in the I Ching, an oracle, to know whether its worth still loving her and hoping she'll come back. On the other hand, Juliana is starting to warm up to Joe and divorced Frank because of the fact that he was too ugly.
Societal confines - obviously Jews can't live anywhere but the Pacific States or the Neutral Zone because the Reich will kill them. Also in the Reich you can't own a copy of The Grasshopper Lies Heavy because it could promote rebellious ideals. In the JPS a Japanese man can marry a yank women and it will still be generally socially acceptable however a yank man can't really pursue a Japanese women.
So far there isn't much villain vs. victim however when Mr. Childan is at a dinner with a Japanese family, they discuss the book. He more or less stands up and defends the Reich while the others think that the book is interesting and might be classified as sci-fi.
                    Focus of This Week
We focused on character development this week. Both Childan and Joe seem to be supporters of the Reich when the book comes up. Also when the leader of the Reich dies, Mr. Tagomi seems to be extremely worried for the furture of the JPS because the Nazis are so much more technologically advanced then them. Additionally since the Reich controls most of the country the new leader might decide whether or not to wage war between the Germans and Japanese.

Characters- Frank, Juliana, Mr Tagomi, Childian, Mr Baynes, and Joe
Setting- Japanese Pacific States (west coast)
Author- PKD
Themes- love, societal confines, prejudice
Focus of the Week- Characters
Childian appears to be racist, partly because of the racial hierarchy that is present in their society. He answers Paul's statement about "authentic American folk jazz" with "Afraid I know little about Negro music". Childian also seems to be very cautious of his social status, paying close attention to every action he makes. Also, Frank has become very pacifistic. He originally wanted to join a violent Japanese resistance wanting to kill a lot of people. He know has grown content with the idea of the Japanese being in control, and no longer wishes to join the resistance.
Focus of the Week- Will the plots interesect?
No, they did not. The ending was strange with the almost "attempt" of the assassination. None of the plots had much to do with each other and hardly anyone crossed paths.

Tagomi did not reach a conclusion about his life and what he would do after, neither did Juliana. Mr. Baynes is left wondering about the war, without getting any closure about his betrayal and whether it was successful or not.
