The Lusitania Crisis happened, and it was one of the first major crisis that challenged US neutrality. Many of the passengers on the ship drowned, and this also included 128 Americans. Because of this Wilson ending up sending Germany a warning message that the country would be held to "strict accountability" if this continued. The secretary, William Jennings Bryan, then ended up resigning from president's cabinet.

There were two additional Americans would lost their lives because of a German submarine attack that happened on another passenger ship. Wilson's note was successful upon the German government because they would make sure that there weren't any unarmed passenger ships that would be sunken, without giving the passengers time to go into lifeboats.

This injured some American passengers and Wilson ended up threatening to cut off the US diplomatic relations with Germany. Germany ended up backing down because this was preparation to war, but Germany actually remained true to its word.

In early 1914, the U.S. had been in a business recession, but rebounded due to their shipping of war supplies to the British and French during the war, and they prospered because of it. With WW1, England became a bigger market for American goods and loans; Wilson lifted the ban on private bank loans to allies, so companies could lend money to Allies to tie American finance to the victory of the British.
