Three Obediences and Four Virtues

‘Three Obediences and Four Virtues’ (三从四德) served as the criteria for women in Confucian society: the ‘Three Obediences’ dictate that women should be obedient to their father, husband, and son. During feudal times, a woman’s goodness was judged based on her obedience. The Four Virtues comprised morality, proper speech, modest behaviour, and diligent needlework. As Mary Wollstonecraft notes, “The essence of power is a dynamic interaction of control and obedience.” Under the patriarchal social structure, Chinese women were often confined to traditional roles and oppressed by gender norms, emphasizing the distinct social hierarchy and Confucian ideology that shaped their lives.

Three Obediences and Four Virtues still exist in the modern age; this project reflects this entrenched custom through conceptual photography. By employing representative elements of Chinese wedding tradition: the apple symbolizes a safe marriage, and the date represents the desire for a son. Additionally, the performance re-enacted the tradition where the bride sits on a basket for five hours, symbolizing character refinement.

Oct 2023

Sony A7 III

sheziyue@gmail.com

Instagram @shezifish

The entire body of work uses women as the subject and wants to express the shame of female menstruation. In daily life, women feel ashamed of the phenomenon of menstruation and their reactions to it. They often avoid or hide it in their behaviour. Menstruation is regarded as dirty, a burden and a shame in the minds of most Chinese women. In addition, women do not want to be noticed, rarely talk about it, and instinctively avoid it because they feel uncomfortable being exposed to the public. I wanted to highlight the phenomenon of women's menstruation through the use of red coloured fruits and the "bread" in Chinese women's mouths. Through this photography, I want to let more women know that menstruation is the birth and death of the lining of the uterus. Tear down the labels attached to it and get rid of the shame attached to it.

yjian001@campus.goldsmiths.ac.uk

Instergram@yyukkijiang

She is a neurotic woman， since I was 14, she has been unable to sleep every day. Her disease was about emotion and sleeping. In those two years, she visited almost all famous hospitals in China, but it was not working. Although she did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her. Finally she expressed her despair in a very excessive way.

I can always remember her limp limbs hanging down. I want to record not only my mother’s scar, but also my scar. This pain is both physical and mental, as well as individual and social. After her long-hidden pain became apparent, I wanted to find the words to express and connect these emotions. People always attribute the cause of disease to the cause and effect, but after accepting the limitations of reality and giving up fantasy, whether the scar that seemed permanent could be healed.

likanyuanice@126.com

IG: @lcyyanna

Whispers of Colour in the Mundane

Digital prints

Shot on Sony A7 III

Photography, to me, unfolds as a quest for self-discovery. Every time I press the shutter, it becomes a pursuit of the elusive connection between the vast world and the depths of my own being. I find solace in photographing small towns, where time flows slowly compared to the bustle of the metropolis.

Brighton became the focus of my lens, documenting the unique charms of the people I encountered on an ordinary Saturday. Every person, every object, every landscape is no longer a simple static image, but a moment of life. My photography is an interweaving of colours and a deep analysis of emotions, stories and city life. The sunlight pours over the streets and alleys, people in markets, and seaside streets. I chase those subtle light and shadows, capture the warmth contained in the sunlight, and tell the story of the city and the resonance I find in that story.

In my lens, people and the city mingle into a marvellous relationship, where every smile and every landscape is a footnote to life. Through my photography, I hope to convey my love for life and reverence for humanity, to outline the beauty of this world with colour and light, and to leave behind a poetic memory.

ceciliachany0718@gmail.com

ig: @ceciliachany

Medication is recast as a vessel for psychic comfort, transcending its curative role to become a symbol of emotional dependency. The pill, delicately balanced at the lips, is a modern-day amulet against anxiety.

Technology's embodiment is a luminescent data cable, caressing the skin, symbolizing our umbilical tie to digital life. Its blue glow, both cold and intimate, speaks to the fusion of our physical selves with the digital pulse.

Light serves as a metaphor for knowledge and aspiration, its dance of colors against the human silhouette not just celebrating diversity but also seeking the unattainable. The connection between these photos is a visual narrative of emotional catharsis. The water symbolizes cleansing, the inversion in the second image represents a world turned upside down, a chaos from which one seeks escape, and the final image suggests a return to the basics, a fetal position reflecting rebirth or the end of a cycle.

The water is her canvas, the sheets her stage, and the shadows her sanctuary. She floats, her thoughts scattering like the strands of her hair in the tranquil depths. It's here, in the embrace of the water, that her journey begins—a quest for catharsis, for freedom from the emotions that weigh upon her soul.

In the next act, the world flips. The certainties of up and down, right and wrong, become fluid, as malleable and tumultuous as the sheets that envelope her. It is a moment of upheaval, where the heart battles the mind, where chaos reigns, and from which clarity must emerge.

And emerge it does. In the final scene, she is reborn. The protective curl of her body, the bare essence of her being exposed to the dim light, speaks of an end and a beginning. In this silent communion with herself, she finds the purity of purpose and the peace of release.

swan002@campus.goldsmiths.ac.uk

IG: @shangyu.susie

As a photographer, I intend to explore and reflect the hustle and bustle of consumer culture in society. In this work, the LUSH brand logo appears repeatedly in a sea of dizzying lights and words, symbolizing the continuous bombardment of commercial advertising on people’s vision. This kind of visual stacking is intended to trigger viewers' thinking about information overload and sensory stimulation in modern consumer society.

The second image also uses multiple exposure techniques, blending geometric forms and textures to create an almost tactile visual effect. These intertwined shapes are not only an exploration of light and shadow, but also an expression of chaotic order. In the heart of Italy lies a region labelled Abruzzo, which is home to various small towns and cities. One small town situated in this region is Paglieta; with a population of just four thousand, the town is littered with abandoned structures and decay, however, such decomposition still resonates with the notion of romantic Italy. It can be seen in every photo here that a person is standing or sitting next to something that can reflect, and what is reflected seems to be another world that belongs to us, which can be called the abbreviation of our inner world. , it belongs to us, where people can express their opinions, express their emotions, and do whatever they want.

I want to express to people through this kind of photography that everyone can create their own world. People usually explore the world externally as much as they explore themselves internally. Everyone can form a brand new world together, and everyone has his own world in his heart. In the world we create, we can heal ourselves, rest, talk to our souls, release our emotions, and the most important thing is to reconcile with ourselves. Don't care too much about the external world and ignore your own heart, and don't care too much about your own interests and ignore the larger world. Each frame is meticulously composed to reveal the vast, cavernous spaces of forgotten infrastructures, suggesting a descent into the bowels of a constructed world.

Through the artful manipulation of light and shadow, "The Depths" transforms these industrial relics into a realm of speculative fiction. The interplay of darkness and the occasional shafts of light illuminating the metallic textures conjure images of a dystopian future or a forgotten past. It's a journey that oscillates between reality and imagination, highlighting the power of human ingenuity and its ability to mold and shape the environment.

These photos go beyond mere documentation of derelict spaces. It's an exploration of the idea that within these abandoned structures lie narratives of what once was and what could be. The photographs serve as portals, offering glimpses into imagined worlds that are deeply rooted in our reality yet extend far beyond it. "The Depths" is not just about the physical spaces it captures; it's about the limitless potential of human creativity to envision and construct worlds within worlds, each with its own history, mysteries, and possibilities. This series stands as a testament to the artistic and imaginative capacities that enable us to venture beyond the visible and known, into the depths of new realms.

yuxiang_tong1998@outlook.com

Each piece captures the essence of nudity, while strategically covering sensitive areas with reflective tape, creating a tantalizing dance of hide-and-seek with the observer's gaze. The use of high saturation and bright colors amplifies the emotional intensity of the images, while unconventional lighting casts otherworldly shadows, deepening the sense of mystery and allure.

The reflective nature of the tape does more than obscure; it serves as a mirror to the societal pressures and norms that often dictate the expression of queer identities. The eyes, windows to the soul, are shielded from view, an embodiment of the private struggle against public scrutiny. The covered sensitive body parts, on the other hand, represent the often redacted narratives of queer lives—what is deemed too provocative or personal for the public eye.

Together, the pieces forge a narrative that is both intimate and universal, a reflection on the act of revealing and the power of what is left unseen. This series dares the onlooker to question their perceptions of nudity, eroticism, and identity, and to find the connections that bind the exposed and the hidden parts of ourselves in the tapestry of queer existence.

colin20021211@gmail.com

Instagram @realcolinc

Art display space (IG) @h.l._chow

A one-time meeting is also a destiny between us. I want to record these moments.

The metro is a very crowded place and everyone who comes here has a clear goal in mind and has their destination. Maybe they just came here from somewhere, or maybe they are going somewhere. On the surface, everyone is focused on one thing, and that is taking the underground. But in reality, everyone has their own life, their things to do, and their inner world. In the seemingly quiet underground, everyone is talking to themselves silently in their hearts.

In this photo I took, two men don't know each other, but they are sitting there in the same position with a tacit understanding. On the escalator, everyone looks different, some are running, some are calmly staring, some are talking to their friends, and some are looking directly at my camera.

“The Wizard of Oz”

Digital print

Shot on Fujifilm X- S10

420x594

This photographic work draws on kitsch's artistic style to create a unique queer fantasy. The core goal of this work is to break the boundaries of gender binary, challenge traditional gender concepts, and demonstrate the charm of queer aesthetics through visual language. By subverting traditional gender symbols and expectations, this work attempts to deconstruct the boundaries of gender identity and demonstrate a freedom and expression beyond convention. Here, a visual narrative of ornate elements is used to support the celebration of queer aesthetics. A suit set with white roses, a ruby ring, and a pearl necklace are used to create a visual impact and a rebellion against traditional gender labels. The superposition of these details, emotions and attitudes are exquisite and idealized. At the same time, the kitsch elements in the work, such as beasts and peacock feather walls, add a surreal feeling to the work and also imply an escape from the real world and the pursuit of an ideal world. The purpose of this design is to hope that the picture can cross the boundary between reality and fantasy and enter a queer fantasy world full of magical colors and deep meaning. For me, this photographic work is not only an exploration of aesthetics, but also a deep exploration of self and identity.

Kli003@gold.ac.uk
