The Introduction is one of the most important parts of the essay. This is where you hook your reader into reading your work. They are informed about what the subject matter is within these first few sentences. There are several parts to an introduction: the hook, the thesis, background information, and a transition sentence. Are there any questions?

Think of the hook like a fishing lure. This is the very first sentence of the introduction. It "hooks" the reader into wanting to read. So what is a hook? It can be a quote or a statistic, an anecdote, or an interesting fact. Make the reader want to read. Are there any questions?

Your thesis should be the second sentence of your introduction. It should also be a three-point thesis. Remember your thesis is broken up into two parts: your claim/argument/position and your talking points/reasoning. Some teachers like the thesis at the end of a paragraph, however, I like the thesis to be the second sentence. This is not necessarily wrong, but be prepared to complete the essay according to the direction of the teacher. Are there any questions?

This is the last sentence of every paragraph except the conclusion or if you are moving into another paragraph writing about the same subject matter. This sentence should move the reader fluidly throughout the essay giving them cues that you are moving the conversation in another direction. This last sentence of the introduction should lead you into the first body paragraph of the essay.

A mini thesis is the first line of the body paragraph. Essentially it is the topic sentence of the paragraph. Take the first talking point/reasoning you have in your thesis and create the topic sentence for the body paragraph. This sentence will begin to shape the understanding of the reader as they move through the reading.
