Title: Rifle

Author: Rudy Francisco

Something Salient: I like how he talks about how a dangerous weapon can become a musical instrument. I also enjoy how he talks about how things can change and how a gun can make everyone in the crowd will move but that music does the same thing and how every person gets to chose how they fight each battle that may appear in their lives.

"Before The Internet," written by Phil Kaye, focused mainly about the gifts of childhood imaginations before the internet took over. The author shares his personal story with his audience about a summer day with his friend. As he plays with his friend outside, he describes his imaginations...

"And at nine years old I transform into things I've never been before

-An astronaut floating in space

-A hummingbird buzzing in place

-A beam of August light, floating through the leaves"

Kaye compares this as a way to show how children used to play, venturing their active creativity. However, at this time, the rise of the internet has altered how children and teens perceive due to the stimulation of social media, as they lack motivation to go out and enjoy being a human.

I think it means that he wasn't hurt in the military but his heart is still hurt, which is why his heart is purple (because it is bruised).

- Makaylah

The poem overall seems to stick out to me when it comes to the mention of "This isn't the 70's anymore". The reason it sticks out may be because of the things I've heard about people and their opinions on others. As times change so should we, maturity, beliefs, ideals and more. I've heard things that some people may just need more understanding of, especially if you have experience with something they may not understand.

Title: Complainers

Rudy Francisco

The main message you get from this poem is you are never given something you can not handle and spending your day complaining about small things is seeing the glass have empty when others are losing their lives or losing their loved ones while you are sitting here complaining about your job or traffic, we all go through tough times but need to remember we are only given things that we can handle no one said it will be easy.

I thought it was interesting how the first example he chose to discuss was how extremely rich people often have not gone to college. I don't really agree with his use of this as an example, since billionares' success can be attributed to luck more than anything. I did like his line about how he believes education is meant to inspire, although there are obvious exceptions like in fields of medicine and engineering.

-Cy B
