Kenneth Roth, the director of Human Rights Watch, laments the “short memory” of Europeans. What does he think they should remember? How might a “sense of history” inform decision making about the refugee crisis? How could it shape Europeans’ universe of obligation? (20 points)

I think he wants Europe to remember the Holocaust and the impact it had on the continent. The article mentions how if people took a minute to think about what they were doing and make the connection that what they were doing was very similar to the Holocaust, they probably would have a lot more people pushing back on it. If more people chose to A sense of history could have prevented something like this and it would make Europe's universe of obligation more inclusive.

Sergio

I believe, throughout the reading, he is making hints and points that are and possibly facts about the Holocaust and what caused the Holocaust. A "sense of history" might inform decision making about a refugee crisis because if the Europeans were to look at what he was saying and were to study the events that lead up to the Holocaust, they would see some similarities and that would most likely cause them to rethink their whole decisions and point of view on immigration. It could shape the Europeans' universe of obligation because if they were to centralize their citizens around a small group of ethnicity's it would make them think of the people from the other countries as lesser and unwanted which would more than likely lead to another event similar to the Holocaust.

Rob Smart
