Shortly after in 1810 his father had abandoned the family and his mother had died the following year after that as well. He was then adopted (however informally) by the Allan family. Edgar eventually attended The University of Virginia but left after one semester due to lack of money. In 1836 he married Virginia Clemm who was only 13 years old. Poe eventually established himself as a poet, short story writer and an editor. As a literary critic, he was known for being harsh in his criticism.  Virginia died of tuberculosis in 1847 and Poe died 2 years later of unknown causes. Slowing Down at Point of Intensity

The speed of the pendulum is slow in its back and forth motion.  The descent towards the heart is excruciatingly slow. He almost wishes it would speed up to end the waiting for the inevitable,
