As an elementary school teacher, burnout is a topic we speak of daily. My biggest takeaway was the Standards of Self-Care Guidelines. Counselors are ethically obligated to practice self-care to provide the best version of themselves to help others in need (Williams, 2011). Many educators and counselors, including myself, need reminders and a plan to practice self-care. The Self-Care Guidelines provide easy-to-understand steps to begin and continue implementing self-care strategies.

Counselors are susceptible to burnout due to the demands of the job. Many counselors have suffered from burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondhand depression, causing them to lose confidence in their profession (Walz & Bleuer, 2016, pg. 2). Self-care is necessary for counselors to be able to cope with the high emotional demands while continuing to assist individuals. "Compassion fatigue is the price of empathy...In our effort to view the world from the perspective of the suffering, we suffer” (Walz & Bleuer, 2016, pg. 3).

Self-care has been an important part of my life since the death of my father. My family has a history of heart disease, and I wanted to make the necessary changes now to avoid those illnesses. Diet and meditation are nonnegotiable for me to move away from. I practice mindfulness through meditation every morning, and when I feel stressed at work. I have made drastic changes to my diet by meal planning and prepping for the week ahead for my family. This does cause some stress from me on Sunday, but makes everyday much easier.

My favorite time of day is cooking dinner for my family and listening to a true crime podcast or music to decompress from the day. During this time, I can forget about the stress from the day and focus on the task at hand. I usually try to solve the crimes or sing at the top of my lungs. Not only am I practicing self-care, but I am also providing a home-cooked meal for my family at the same time!
