Queer Theory emerged with Third-wave Feminism, and it focused on challenging the traitional gender and sexuality norms that have been instilled by society. This theory argues that gender and sexual orientation is not biological, however, something tha is shaped by social, cultural, and historical influences. It also explains that Queer Theory aims to get rid of "normal" in terms of what gender and sexuality should look like.

In 1991, Judith Butler wrote, "Imitation and Gender Insubordination," which focused on tearing down the traditional gender and sexual norms. Butler argues that both gender and sexual norms are created by social norms, instead of fixed. She continues to argue that gender is not something we specifically are, but something we act upon based of culutural and societal norms. She also argues that "heterosexuality" is constructed and is not an original identity.

Anne Fausto-Sterling spoke out against traditional binary understanding of sex in her article, "Should There Be Only Two Sexes." Sterling argued that biological sex is on a spectrum, and cannot be defined as just "Male" and "Female." Instead, she introduces five sexes. In addition to male and female, she introduces herms (true hermaphrodites), merms (male "pseudo-hermaphrodites"), and ferms (female "pseudo-hermaphrodites").

Herms are people whom have both ovaries and testes, Ferms are people who have XY chromosomes, testes, and some aspect of female genatalia, and Merms are those who have XX chromosomes and some aspect of male genatalia.

She explains that these people (herms, ferms, and merms) exist in society, however, they do not technically fit in to the "two" gender system. She uses the example of Thomas Hall, who declared himself both female and male in a court situation. Sterling argues that we should seen on a spectrum instead of just chromosomes and sex.

Jack Halberstam speaks on the involvment of queer identities in traditional understandings of heteronormativity.

Halberstam wanted to challenge the linear cycle of heteronormative lives. For instance a child is born, they go through childhood, they become educated, they get married, they have children, and then they retire. This cycle has become a linear stereotype, however, Halberstam introduces that queer lives follow a more nonlinear timeline. For instance, marriage and reproduction happen at alternative times to the heteronormative linear lifestyle.

Additionally, geography is determined through heteronormativity as well. For example, workplaces, cities, and even housing is reinforced by heteronormative stereotypes and expectations. Alternatively, there is different public areas made for queer people, that live outside of the heternormative atmosphere (pride parades, drag scenes, and inclusive nightlife).

Halberstam finished their arguement by stating that politics have failed the queer community by creating a capitalist and patriarchial society that have discriminated against queer communities and also by enforcing laws that prohibits them to not get married or have children. Halberstam askes that we look beyond the heteronormative linear life and think more creatively.
