There is also discussion about boys hanging from the trees, which is a result of lynching. The tree on her back can be seen as beautiful because it shows how much she endured in order to get out, but it can also be scary and unattractive, as Paul D mentions in one of the chapters. He originally thought it was interesting and beautiful, but when he looks at it again in the bed, he finds it repulsive.
