Professional counselors have the responsibility of supporting and providing services to others. Self care is key to ensure that the services being provided are adequate and helpful. A well-rested counselor who is taking care of themselves will better take care of others and this is what will allow for better counseling overall.

When an individual focuses on their wellbeing and make self care a priority they can generally perform better in many different aspects of life including professionally. In counseling for example, compassion fatigue is very common and if a counselor is not going home and taking time for themselves it can really lead them to burnout even faster. Counseling can be a very emotional draining career but if they prioritize self care they can continue helping others longer and enjoying what they do.

For me self care can look a little different depending on how I am feeling. If I am extremely overwhelmed and feeling like I have too much on my plate I like to go for long walks in the evening. It helps me move my body and enjoy nature. After walks I usually feel less stress and my mind is clear. Other times I like to do things that make me happy. I enjoy working on Legos so when I know I have been doing so many other things and need to focus on me I carve some time in the afternoons and weekends to work on them. Exercise and hobbies are my two main strategies.
