1b)  It demonstrates active learning as students have to actively research on the topic before teaching the class.  Reflective learning also takes place as we make linkages to our past experiences when we do a sharing or ask questions.

problem-based learning motivate authentic learning and active thinking process. Group work is the form of collaborative learning. And we are doing reflective learning now.

I think implement of ICT is important but not necessary. ICT helps to make our activities more fun and effective. Especially for the students nowadays, studying with ICT can attract their attentions easier and managing technological skills are compulsory for them as well.

a.      Content is broken into smaller pieces, and the pupils focus only on their own part, which allow them to learn more thoroughly and effectively.

b.      Sharing will be done among groups, pupils have to understand the content thoroughly and interpret in their own words.

c.      Collaborative / Cooperative learning will be done within group member, where they will communicate among themselves to discuss the assigned topic, helping each other to learn about the assigned topic.

 

a.      While other group is sharing, groups that present later might not be 100% focus on the sharing (nervous for the upcoming presentation)

b.      Students might know well on their assigned topic, but the learning quality during the sharing(on the other topics) might not as good as their assigned topic.

 

In my opinion, peer learning demonstrate 3 21QL, which are active learning, collaborative learning and reflective learning. Firstly, students are to work and think actively to acquire knowledge from their assigned topic. While working in groups, group members work collaboratively and communicate among each other in order to finalise the outcome. During the sharing, especially the Q&A session, students can reflect on their learning and get a chance to think deeper.

 

Yes we can, but it will consume more time. Using ICT enable us to explain things in one click, without ICT, it will take more time to do explanation, especially on abstract concept. Besides, using ICT allow us to show video clips, images to support our presentation, which will attracts the students’ attention and interest. 

 

In this peer teaching activities, ICT mainly works as a sharing platform.

1.      Sharing among group member (Google Slides)

2.      Sharing to other groups (PowerPoint presentation)

3.      Sharing of knowledges and resources (ICT e-Hub Jul 2016)

Peer teaching involves students helping each other learn and grow. There are a few advantages for this learning:

1.     Student will be more responsible for their learning. So usually will achieve better understanding of the teaching topics.  Due to motivation and pressure of teaching, peer tutor need to well prepare and fully understanding before can be a teacher. 

2.     Peer teaching can excel student’s creativities. As many differ way of thinking can be shown in class.  

3.     Peers will also gains stronger peer relationships. As usually peer teaching is multi-directional, either a few person share one topic with different parts to collaborate teaching, or they will learn different topics and take turn to teach each other. In this process they can understand each other better, or might help each other and establish better relationship. 

4.     Peer teaching separate the work load, and become very efficient learning if all the student put in the effort. 

 

Disadvantage

 

5.     Peer teaching can become ineffective and a burden for teachers if teacher simply leave everything to student without proper instruction and useful resources provided or support. Hence, peer teaching should have quality instruction and correct student attitude and certain consequences as insurance. .

6.     Peer teaching sometimes will have risk of student teacher give a totally wrong concept and understanding, so this will make the teacher worse to re-explain the whole concept. Such teacher need to well select and give proper guidance before do this exercises. 

 

2. How does this demonstrate 21QL?

Our 1st peer teaching experience exercise has totally demonstrated the 21QL concept. 1st this is Authentic learning- we applies many strategies. Such as role play, we act as student-teacher. Experience the real teaching.  We use real context and real activities to have true experience. And then we use various way to articulate what we have learn.

1a . Based on your experience, what are the strengths and weaknesses of peer teaching?

 

Strengths:

1.     Peers may be more like-minded and present information in a manner that is better received.

2.     There will be opportunity for group discussions which will mean that misinterpretation of material can be avoided.

 

Weaknesses:

1.     It may be difficult to ensure the participation of all group members if the work is group work

2.     Errors in interpretation may be made since peers are not subject matter experts and only know as much as they have read up.

 

1b. How does this demonstrate 21QL?

 

21QL is demonstrated mainly in the Authentic, Collaborative and Reflective learning sections. Authentic Learning takes place when we participate in the activity as we put ourselves in the shoes of our students and become students ourselves. The group work tasks then allow us to have collaborative learning and reflective learning as we discuss our assigned topics and come up with a presentation.

 

Can we do without ICT for our activities? 

Yes. But in this case, information can be shared in a clear manner with the help of ICT and it would be much more difficult without ICT.

 

What are the roles of ICT?

ICT can be the platform that information is shared in the case of Google docs. The internet is also a valuable information resource. Powerpoint slides makes presentation of information easier.

Based on your experience, what are the strengths and weaknesses of peer teaching? 

Peer teaching is a 21QL learning experience to me. We self-learn the theories of 21QL in groups, we reflect our classes and look for the solutions how to improve our classes, which is authentic, active, reflective and collaborative. The peer teaching adds a lot of understanding of 21QL to me.

During peer teaching, we self-learn and teach each other in groups. Since all of us are student teachers, we might not be conscious of some mistakes and misunderstanding. We might need some guidance and reminder and correction from professors.

• How does this demonstrate 21QL? 

The 4 main characteristics of 21QL is Authentic learning, Active learning, Reflective learning and Collaborative learning. The contents of peer teaching related with our real-world job—teaching. We are acting from the best of motives. We are learning various ways of learning, that’s active and useful. We use the theories we’ve learnt to reflect our classes we’ve told, that’s reflecting learning. And we learn in groups, every one delves into some part of the project, then teacher each other in peer teaching. We works in groups, that’s collaborative learning.

Maybe we can finish our activities without ICT. But with my experience , ICT is the most important and powerful tools for our activities. ICT makes our activities effective, clear and easy.

in peer teaching and self-study, most of us using PPT, INTERNET, video and many other ICT methods. 

• How do you assess learning? (process and product) 

I think practice is the criterion for assessing my learning. I should use the theories that I’ve learnt into my teaching classes. Test and reflect my learning and improve my teaching.

Strengths: Firstly, peer teaching allows for students to explore deeper into the subject matter as it requires them to first equip themselves with the necessary knowledge before they are able to engage in peer teaching. Hence, they will read up on it in greater detail before teaching their classmates. Secondly, peer teaching trains students in soft skills such as communication as they would need to explain information to their classmates in a manner that they can understand. This helps to build their self-confidence towards public speaking and increases their overall learning effectiveness.

 

Weaknesses: The main weakness of peer teaching comes from student control and management. This is because students may make use of the time allocated to talk about irrelevant subjects instead of the prescribed topic. Therefore, peer teaching requires students to adhere to a certain level of individual discipline. In addition, there may be students who are unwilling to engage in peer teaching due to their reserved personalities. Thus, the inclusiveness of the activity may be compromised as there will be some students not engaging in the activity. This will ultimately undermine the quality of learning for students.

 

 

The main branch of 21QL demonstrated in peer teaching is Collaborative Learning. Peer teaching enables students to work together in achieving the lesson objectives. The action of peer teaching also demonstrates active learning as during the teaching process, students should be active listeners, asking questions whenever there are any points that they do not understand. Thus, it can be seen that peer teaching requires students to collaboratively engage in active learning.

In conducting peer teaching or other classroom activities, it is possible to execute them without the use of ICT. This would require teachers to provide materials e.g. markers, mahjong papers. This traditional method of content delivery will be in hardcopy form and students are able to write down what they want to express. Nevertheless, the introduction of ICT tools in conducting the activities streamlines the overall process as it simplifies the preparation process (aesthetically/time required). Moreover, in an increasingly technology-friendly environment, ICT plays the role of facilitating activities, enhancing students’ learning process.
