It was made by Archibald and James Maconoshie. The Maconoshies were from Lowestoft in Suffolk but they saw a gap in the market and moved to Aberdeenshire. They became very successful in canning fish and decided to produce different meals and preserves too. The stew was usually eaten cold. It has a reputation of tasting awful.

Bully beef was basically just tinned corned beef. This was first introduced as a ration for British soldiers during the Boer War. Sometimes this was served in slices of bread as a sandwich, or combined with potatoes to form a hash.

Soldiers generally did not like this bread due to its gross ingredients.

For example if a soldier went out into no mans land, food could be the difference between life and death. These Rations contained an emergency supply of preserved meat, cheese, biscuit, tea, sugar and salt.

Split Pea Soup was a very common meal during world war one. Split peas have lots of fibre, protein, and iron so this meal was a very healthy ration for soldiers.
