One of the people apart of the altercation had dreadlocks and police tried to accuse Hay of shaving his hair off after the altercation and was taken by police.

All evidence pointing fingers to Hay was very hard to prove. One eye witness who had spoken up was given a photo line-up and initially picked Hay, but in another photo line-up she did not pick him. Police still had no evidence that Hay was linked and that he was had shaved his hair off in between times. Even with little to no evidence it is scary to see how fast someone can be convicted when they are innocent.
