         <description><![CDATA[<div>Active: subject performs action (ex. The dog bit the man)&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;Passive: subject receives action (ex. The man was bitten by the dog).&nbsp;<br><br>The passive voice is wordy and vague and while the active voice is more direct and clear, which allows a point to be explained in a more concise manner to the reader.<br><br>Clever tip to distinguish passive vs. active: If you can add "by zombies" after the verb in a sentence and it still makes sense, then the sentence was most likely written in the passive voice. Can occur in two "fused" sentences, or in run-ons.<br><br>Sometimes students write comma splices when they're trying to be more informal.          <description><![CDATA[<div>The subject should match the verb in terms of number (e.g. if the subject is singular, the verb must also be singular)<br><br>Student may have a hard time figuring out if a subject is singular or plural (e.g. with collective nouns: everyone may seem plural but it's singular)<br><br>Helping the student understand the perspective of the reader (having the correct subject/verbs makes it more clear and easier to read for the reader)<br><br>It may be helpful to show the student through examples, maybe from the students work.&nbsp;<br>Find a place where the student did it wrong, show them how to fix it, and then ask them to identify and fix it in another spot<br><br><br><br></div>]]></description>
