Day 1 of pre production Nov 11th

I started doing the marked up script for our director . In my notes are some things mentions by our director about the style of this piece. They spoke about what inspires their creative vision such as the 80's style of fashion and a Steam punk /goth style . They spoke about the importance of representing lesbian characters on screen. We also spoke about the production side of things such as how we would film the strangers death scene . Our director said that they were basing the character abilities on various vampire films/ shows the main one being Buffy the vampire slayer. When the stranger dies in the script he is burnt by the cross and we were going to be attempting to create that moment on film. My suggestion was to go a more practical route I used the Wicked witch's death in The Wizard Of Oz as an example . I think that could work as our film is described by the director as a Dark comedy. This scene be both funny and terrifying.

It was super cold outside today I need to wrap up warmer for next time.The shoot went well though and we all made sure to keep our cast warm with blankets and coats as soon as the director yells cut.

Learning and growing

As I make more call sheets I am able to make them quicker and more independently . On my first call sheet I made a mistake by misplacing a cast members name however I fixed it and learned from that experience . I now know what information I can fill in myself and what I details I need to ask our director for. I always make sure that our director has approved of the sheet before I send it to the rest of our cast and production team.

We had less crew in as we were only filming one scene, this helped us stay focused and some people could have a day off.

While filming this scene 12B I noticed the hands on the book cover were pointing towards the ring. I thought that this could look really symbolic if the camera crew could capture that image, they did attempt the idea however I wasn't able to see how it went as my priority was acting in this scene.

4th December Final shoot!

Today started off strong, our production team and actors worked efficiently and we moved through shots easily.When we film outside it's important to not get our equipment in shot and so I made sure to move our bags to an appropriate spot where we could also keep an eye on it.However as we progressed with the action scenes there were some unfortunate problems. Our actress who plays Veronica was uncomfortable with having to fall on the floor and so we made sure to comfort her and some of the crew laid their jackets down .Unfortunately this didn't solve the problem and we decided it would be best to take a break and so I offered my umbrella to our actors as it began to rain and we went inside. After the break I marked the shots and helped out where I could.

I have learned so much throughout this whole process I loved working with our amazing cast and crew! I was especially happy to work along side our director ,producer and writer who communicated with me throughout this entire process making sure we were all on the same page ,this made my role as First AD so enjoyable , we worked well as a team to keep the production process as efficient as possible.

On set sometimes cast and crew where a little unfocused and so if the director hasn't noticed I make sure to speak up and let people know we are doing a take or that they may be in shot. Thankfully our team is not disruptive on purpose so I didn't have to convince anyone to listen, they understood right away.

On set I was a messenger for the crew if they needed to tell the director something they came to me to pass on the message. For example if the Production assistant hasn't been told if the take should be marked as yes or no, I'd go to the director and get that confirmation from them then pass it on. Sometimes when filming in the cafe location a customer would walk in and I would tell them the shop is closed.

The director needed a little more light and so I helped out by holding another aperture as lighting needed to be in two places at once.

Today I brought in a an extra scarf and coat for anyone who may be cold on set. I also brought in my own high-vis vest to be safer while filming in the park. I did end up giving the vest to our PA's as they needed it more than me because they were stood further from the group and we need to make sure they were visible.

Contingency is key!

One of the biggest lessons I've learned during this process is that contingency time is so important. Thankfully we had enough time in the end but it could've gone wrong if we were not already prepared.

Week 1 Nov 22nd

While filming scene 7 I helped our PA's and set dec decorate because they needed some assistance and it would make the filming process faster since we needed all the decor up before we could film anything. Because we were filming in a small room, I as the assistant director made sure that only the necessary crew needed were in the room. The small space also meant that people were more prone to chatter in between takes but I made sure we all stayed on track. Unfortunately today we did run overtime, we finished about an hour later than scheduled mainly as it is a new location. Setting up everything took much longer than expected even setting up shots took some time. I think going forward I will speak up more when we are running over time , I definitely think that we need to move on quicker to the next shot. Other than that I think the day was still a success and we got a lot done.
