1. Major challenges and opportunities of the social developmental area:

In the social developmental area, one major challenge is the complex interplay between individual characteristics, social interactions, and environmental factors. The opportunities lie in understanding how social factors shape an individual's behavior, cognition, and emotional development. Bandura's theory provides a framework to examine how social learning occurs within various contexts and the potential impact of socialization on individuals.

2. Strengths of the theory as it relates to social development:

The theory acknowledges the reciprocal relationship between individuals and their environment, highlighting the bidirectional influence between social and cognitive processes.

3. Weaknesses of the theory as it relates to social development:

It does not fully explain how individuals encode, store, and retrieve observed behaviors, which limits the understanding of the cognitive mechanisms involved in social learning.

4. Implications for supporting adolescents:

Understanding the principles of social learning can inform interventions and support strategies. For example, positive role models and mentors can be introduced to provide adolescents with opportunities for observational learning and positive socialization. Creating a supportive and nurturing environment that encourages prosocial behaviors and provides opportunities for skill-building and social interaction can also promote healthy adolescent development.

Moral judgments made in laboratory settings may not fully capture the complexity and contextual factors that influence moral decision-making in everyday life.

Underestimation of Social Influences: Kohlberg's theory places less emphasis on the social and cultural influences on moral development.

Adolescent are searching their role, they see their friends have high similarity with themselves, so they are more attended to their friends. Spend more time with friends than their family. Stage 1 of social learning theory is achieved (Attention).

Because more attention is given to their friends, the model shifted from their parents to their peers. As a result, they also value peers more, and they may feel worry about themselves are different from the group. So they will memorise peers behaviour and try to reproduce the behaviour to share the same identity and become in group. Hence, reached stage 2 retention.

As adolescent pfc are not fully developed yet, they exp illusion of invulnerability, hence they evaluate the behaviour with less risk, facilitating the motivation to reproduce the behaviour.

-Opportunity: reproduce good/healthy behaviour

-Risk: reproduce bad/unhealthy behaviour

Reached stage 3 motor reproduction.

After reproducing, they feel they are more connected with friends, reinforcing their reproducing act.

1. The scenario depicts Maya, a 16-year-old high school student, who faces the challenge of balancing her own identity and interests with the influence of a new group of popular friends. Maya's passion for painting conflicts with the pressure to conform to her friends' interests and activities.

2. The core problem or challenge in this scenario is Maya's struggle to maintain her authenticity and stay true to her own passions while seeking acceptance and fitting in with her peers.

3. The scenario can be related to Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, specifically the stage of identity versus role confusion. During adolescence, individuals try to establish a sense of personal identity and develop a clear understanding of who they are. Maya's experience reflects the conflict between exploring her own identity and conforming to the expectations of her peers.

4. Maya can navigate the complexities of identity formation, overcome the challenges posed by peer influence, and shape a sense of self that is genuine and fulfilling.

1. Describe the scenario

Jamie, a 15-year-old, a F.4 student, has recently started hanging out with a new group of friends. He was an attentive student and considered somewhat shy, but Jamie has begun to exhibit behaviors that totally different with before, such as skipping classes and being dismissive to teachers. This new peer group is known for their rebellious behavior and disregard for school rules. Jamie's parents and teachers have noticed this shift and are concerned about Jamie's academic performance and overall well-being.

2. Identify the core problem or challenge

The core problem is Jamie's negative behaviors influenced by a new peer group. Jamie is at a developmental stage where peer acceptance becomes increasingly important, which can sometimes lead to losing previously held values and behaviors to fit in with peers. The challenge here is to help Jamie navigate peer relationships without surrendering to negative peer pressure, while also maintaining a healthy social development stage.

3. Explain how the scenario is related to one or more developmental theory of adolescence

This scenario is closely related to social learning theory, which assumes that people learn from one another via observation, imitation, and modeling. Adolescence is a critical period for social development, individuals are particularly easily influence of observed behaviors, especially those of peers with whom they seek acceptance. The theory suggests that Jamie may be imitating the behaviors of the new peer group because they provide a model that Jamie perceives as rewarding in the social context of the school.

Bandura's concept of reciprocal determinism, a core component of social learning theory, also plays a role here. It explains how individuals are not only influenced by their environment, but also increase influence upon it. Jamie's changing behavior affects how teachers and peers interact with Jamie, creating a new dynamic that could reinforce the negative behaviors.

4. Explain how the core problem or challenge can be best addressed or resolved

 To address this challenge:

 - Positive Role Modeling:

Introduce Jamie to positive role models, such as older students or mentors who exemplify good behaviors while still enjoying social acceptance. This can provide Jamie with alternative behaviors to imitate that are more constructive.

 - Parental Involvement:

Encourage Jamie's parents to engage in open and non-judgmental communication, discussing the consequences of negative behaviors and reinforcing the family's values.

 - School Intervention:

The school can implement programs that promote positive peer groups and extracurricular activities that align with Jamie's interests, providing a sense of belonging and acceptance outside of the current peer group.

 - Counseling:

A counselor can work with Jamie to develop self-efficacy and decision-making skills, helping to recognize the long-term benefits of positive behaviors over the short-term rewards of negative peer acceptance.

 - Critical Thinking Skills:

Help Jamie develop media literacy and critical thinking skills to better analyze the behaviors of peers and media influences, fostering a more selective approach to behavior adoption
