I think they are specialist because they mainly live in swamps and don't really travel far from them it gives them quite a advantage on their prey

They have survived so long cause they can live practically anywhere.They do not have many natural predators.Their thick skin helps protect from animals and weather.Also they can lay up to 35 to 90 eggs, this gives a great chance that Lot of them will survive.

Before a crocodile lays it's eggs it digs a hole 10 feet deep and hide the entrance and it makes it easier since they have really good memory
