“Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire… progressively worse every year.” p.108

Scout was told by Aunt Alexandra that ladies (girls) should not be doing things that require them to wear breeches. Instead, she said Scout should play with little stoves and tea sets while wearing a dress, like a lady. This shows the past image and expectations of girls which is to stay at home and not play outdoor.

“Of course some afternoons when I … these ladies.’” p.175, 176

This was written in Scout's POV. For her, Aunt Alexandra and her friends never really do anything but staying indoor all day (since she, unlike other "ladies", loved to play outdoor with Jem and Dill). This suggests the everyday-life of women at the 1930s.

Even within the group of ladies, the expectations for women were to be good at chores, houseworks, taking care of children, etc. These expectations, a part of the culture, were deep in the people's minds. It would be hard to change them, but that would certainly create a bigger impact when that expectation is shifted in the future.

“Historically, men have held jobs outside the home while women tended to the house and family … but that situation began to change …. ”

Ever since the feminism rose in 1960s, women had gained more freedom and flexibility in life. Instead of relying on men, who supported the families’ economies and therefore took full control of, women were out of the home and into the labor force. Many became independent, especially economically, although the gender inequalities in workplace continued to show the superior thoughts of men.

In the 1960s, more women than ever entered the paid workforce. Also, by the end of the 60s, more than 80% of wives were using contraception after the federal government approved a birth control pill. This freed women from being trapped in the stereotypical role of taking care of children (and therefore stay at home) for most of their lives. The 60s feminists’ goals, such as equal pay for equal work and sharing the responsibility for housework and child rearing, were gradually accepted by the American society. The feminists aimed to let females take part in economic roles and gain authority in the family instead of being ruled over by men.

Liberation groups were formed and protests were held for women to speak up for themselves. Laws for equal pay and the right to use contraceptives allowed females to live freely and independently under a safer and fairer environment. Women stood up to prove themselves in and out of workplace that it is necessary for them to take part in the society, that was once completely controlled by men, in order to establish a better future for all.
