The role of the motif is to make this piece easily remembered (which it did) and to create the tension and suspense of the piece. It is a very wide range with some high parts (not ear-piercing high) to extremely low pitches). The melody changes key around the middle from Minor to Major, with lots of harmony and layers, then after goes back to iconic 2 notes.
