We currently have 33 consultants working in the department each having their own specialities including foot and ankle ,hand ,shoulder, knee,hip and spine. Each consultant has both an orthopaedic and fracture clinic each week.

As part of the role of the fracture clinic nurse we are responsible for the care of patients from cradle to grave .Each patient has their own individual needs and requirements treatments range from splint application and plaster casts through to suture removal and complex wound dressings for both adults and children

We strive to inform and educate our patients on caring for themselves and looking after their own health, after experiencing a fracture oxygen is needed to enhance the healing of wounds and bones it is therefore essential for patients that smoke to be aware of the risks of fracture non union if they continue to smoke during this period . we give advice and signpost patients to the relevant help groups. Healthy eating and maintenance of a healthy weight is also very important for bone healing and to reduce pressure on joints ,especially those patients awaiting hip/knee replacement surgery.

Bone health is especially important to reduce the incidence of fractures especially for women after the menopause. Bone density is reduced due to a fall in oestrogen levels weakening the bones and simple falls can result in fractures .particularly in the wrist, humerus, spine and hip. These patients are often referred for bone density scans (dexa scans) if osteoporosis is found patients are advised to have a calcium rich diet and may need to take supplements

BOA casting course.

We are very proud of the fact that we are one of only three centres in the UK that teach the BOA casting course. It is a six months day release course, where a mixture of musculoskeletal theory and practical casting skills are taught to students from all over the UK. The end result is an examination in the prestigious Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore London to become a qualified Orthopaedic Practitioner.
