Pubic lice is caused by the crab louse insect and mainly infest pubic hairs, but it can also infest other areas of the body with coarse hairs. They get their name from their shape and their claws are similar to a crab. It is mainly spread by sexual contact with an infested person. Treatments for pubic lice are a permethrin lotion or a pyrethrin butoxide mousse. Crabs do not have any long-term effects other than itching if left untreated. Pubic lice can be preventable by practicing safe sex and avoiding sharing towels and bedding with a person who is infested.
