Owners choose the level of permissions/restrictions so the user knows exactly what they can and cannot do with an image.

The search provided on the Creative Commons website allows you to search content from other organisations that they have made available for use under certain conditions.

all provide images that are licensed under a Creative Commons Zero licence (CC0). This means they can be used without any restrictions (as long as it doesn't promote anything illegal or immoral).

People who store and share their photos on Flickr can easily choose restrictions that range from full copyright to CC0. So you know "up-front" what you have permission to do with an image.

The British Library and other organisations also have collections on Flickr which have no known copyright restrictions.
