What is Cougar Code?

Cougar Code is a set of rules that students follow at Coonley Elementary School. The purpose of these rules are to help students know expectations throughout the building. Namely, the rules are to be respectful, responsible, and safe. These rules can look very different depending on the setting students are in throughout their school day!

According to this Prezi, Active Learning is, "when students take responsibility for their learning and engage in the material through reading, writing, talking, listening, and reflecting." It truly is when students are in charge of their own learning instead of cliche picture of the teacher standing in front of the class and lecturing.

Some examples of active learning would be engaging in labs, problem-based learning, seminars, projects, etc. Anything that is hands on because by doing, children learn better.

Suggestions

First off, I wanted to say that I really liked the activity students engaged in. I think it helps to make it visual for students about what these expectations look like.

One suggestion I might add is having students act out how to be respectful, responsible, and safe in each setting. Students could still use technology to take pictures of one another as they do this. Then, I think printing out pictures and placing them around the room or school would be a good reminder for students.

At the middle school I teach at, we also use the expectations of being respectful, responsible, and safe. Instead of "Cougar Code," we call it "The Marquardt Way".

During the first week of school, students go to different stations around the school to listen to a presentation about what these expectations look like in different settings. Some examples are in the hallway, bathroom, library, bus, office, and classroom.

I have also taught these expectations when thinking specifically about the science classroom. Students generated lists of what these expectations look like, sound like, and feel like. Then, we voted on the top 3 of each to make as class rules in which we all signed in agreement to follow.

Attached below is the document I used:
