Floyd was arrested after a store clerk accused him of using a counterfeit $20 bill. During the arrest, former police officer Derek Chauvin pinned Floyd to the ground, kneeling on his neck for over nine minutes while Floyd repeatedly said, "I can't breathe." Despite bystanders pleading for his release, Chauvin continued applying pressure until Floyd became unresponsive.

Garner died on July 17, 2014 after gasping for air when he was heard saying "I can't breathe," several times after he was put in an illegal chokehold by police.

The director uses this scene to allow the viewers to experience broader, real-world issue of police violence against Black individuals, further underscoring the film's critique of systemic racism and police brutality.

Allusion to Rocky

At the end of the film, Carter flips his hood up shortly before leaving the building once again to try to get back home to his dog. This scene alludes to the film Rocky. Rocky is known for being incredibly determined despite him being considered to be a bad person due to his upbringing. This characterization of Rocky fits almost perfectly with Carter. He has shown throughout the film that he, along with all african americans, is determined to survive despite any and all challenges faced, and, in carter's case, get back home to his dog.

Carter's Dog in the film was named after Derek Jeter and this alludes to the fact and or idea that even though Carter has a well paying job and is a kind-hearted, wealthy man, he is still a target of racism and microaggressions from the police in particular.

This is a reflection of actual disasters that leave families grieving and with unsolved questions. Because systematic injustice silences many victims, the film purposefully chooses not to give Perri a voice or a resolution.
