These screens trap large objects while allowing the rest of the wastewater to pass through. In our lab, we used a netting to substitute for metal bars and the large objects that were trapped were dirt, tea bags, and leaves. This allows the fine solids and some germs to settle to the bottom of the tank forming a thick layer of sludge. Lighter substances like oils float to the surface. The oils are scraped off the surface and buried in a landfill and the sludge is removed from the bottom of the tank. In our lab, we let the mixture stand flat for 1 minute. The oil and leaves floating on the surface was removed by using a teaspoon and cotton wool. This occurs in large tanks called bioreactors. Dissolved nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous are removed. In our lab, we added a mixture of fine dry sand and ENO’s into the bioreactor bottle. This represents the special organisms used to remove the dissolved nutrients from the water. In large tanks, the water slows down and the clumps of tiny organisms sink to the bottom forming a brown sludge layer, known as secondary sludge. This leaves a clear layer of water on top which is sent for disinfection and sludge on the bottom which is removed and used as fertilizer. In our lab, we let our mixture sit for 1 minute and all the sludge sank to the bottom and created brown water all through. It is added to the water in a disinfection tank. To replicate this step, we used 2 teaspoons of household bleach and stirred it with a clean teaspoon in our disinfection bottle. Our water compared to the control water and mostly likely compared to actual water that undergoes disinfection was a lot more brown and dirty-looking.
