My nursing philosophy is to continue and strive to be caring. My core beliefs and values of nursing are integrity and life-long learning. From a very young age, I was hospitalized for a rare illness; kawasaki disease. Since then, I have been hospitalized at least five more times and each time, the nursing staff has been so caring and has provided me with compassion. Since I have experienced this from such a young age, I have taken it to heart that this is a life-long journey. I have realized to pick right back up when I have been beaten down. I aspire to create a caring environment as the nurses before me have.

Evaluate nursing care based on the legal and ethical framework of the state in which they practice and the American Nurses Association Standard of Practice and Code of Ethics.

In NURS 220 I practiced the ethical principle of beneficence as described in the weekly reflection paper. This experience taught me a valuable lesson to always do your five rights of medication administration. As happy as I am that this did not happen to me, it will always be an issue that I will not forget.

An ethical issue that was brought up during my clinical rotation, was one of a classmates. The client was to be discharged that day and when the blood pressure was checked it was lower than normal. It was then noted that a blood pressure was given outside of the perimeter provided. The patient was also severely dehydrated; had not urinated and did not drink much water all day. With this being said, many members of the staff seemed to only care about the fact that the client was to stay longer, taking up a bed, rather than the actual care of the patient. It was very disheartening for me because it really made me think of how uncaring that scenario was. It was sad to see that the patient was not priority in this situation and that the staff had other concerns. I think that it is important to follow legal responsibilities but also have an ethical mind about everything. One thing I can do is learn from all that happened this week. The med error incident to the ethical questioning of the staff to the bed bugs, this week has really taught me to speak up and have good communication. With good communication, I feel that responsible behavior will follow. I can continue my professional growth outside of the clinical setting by allowing myself to have good ethical practice with others. Behaviors that were seen this week were not my favorite, but I will be able to learn from it and continue on with my professional growth.
