“Education cannot be neutral. It is either positive or negative; either it enriches or it impoverishes; either it enables a person to grow or it lessens, even corrupts them.”

How could, in Pope Francis’ words, education be “negative?” How could it “corrupt” a person?

Education could be negative if a person chooses to use their knowledge they were given for evil. If a person uses the skills they have learned for selfish or hateful purposes then their education has corrupted then and has been a negative experience.

Education can be positive by giving you knowledge and the ability to make good choices. If you go to Catholic school you learn about Catholic teachings and values. With this knowledge, you can use your God-given ability to freely choose God. By choosing to follow God your will aligns with God's and therefore you better yourself and grow as both a person and a Catholic.

How could education help fight against ignorance (in a spiritual sense)? How does this relate to the gift of the Holy Spirit?

Ignorance is when a person chooses evil so often that they develop a sort of spiritual blindness and can no longer distinguish between good choices and bad choices. Education gives you the tools, intelligence, and worldly knowledge to go out into the world and make good choices. By making these good choices you are protecting yourself from developing this blindness. This relates to the gift of the holy spirit because just like the knowledge and reason that we develop in school, the holy spirit acts as a counselor to help you choose to be one with God.

How do the concepts of free will and free choice relate to goal five?

Goal five is defined as "personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom." Wise freedom means that you are free to make your own choices but it is the hope that we make them "wisely," meaning that you choose good over evil. In this scenario, the school gives us freedom to make our choices just as God does, but just like with free choice in the theological sense, we are not truly free. If we consistently choose poorly we will become slaves to the consequences of our actions. However, when we consistently choose good we are able to grow in love and holiness. Therefore, when we make choices in an "atmosphere of wise freedom" we will see "personal growth."

How could education, and more specifically a Sacred Heart education, help you see the familiar in new ways, causing you to grow? How does receiving a Sacred Heart education relate to the idea of connectedness?

The idea of connectedness shows that while we are all unique beings created by God, we are also part of a much larger world community that connects us to people that may seem very different than us. Through the Sacred heart social action program we get to interact with people of different race, gender, and socioeconomic background. This experience can shift your perspective and connect you to people in your community. Also the Sacred Heart schools are part of a world-wide network that connects us to students all over our wider global community.
