Nicole:

Slide 8 – Juliane, I thought you did a great job being the teacher in your video for timbre. You added many creative elements (sounds effects) and demonstrated timbre really well! The videos were really fun to watch, I like how you mentioned how we all have our own unique timbres which relates us to who we are. I think this is a great way to explain the element of timbre for students to best understand it.

You outlined each part of the lesson very well, and the videos provided great insight into how this may play out in a classroom. You provided great instruction regarding how to do these activities if we were to perform this in a classroom. The example you provided for your activity is also an awesome scaffolding exercise to prepare your students to complete this activity on their own!

WOW! Awesome video everyone. It was engaging to watch and very easy to follow along with. I'd like to highlight how Julianne did a great job of using kitchen appliances to show different sounds and how it relates to Timbre. Obviously if circumstances were different, Julianne could have used real instruments from Brock, but due to to the pandemic she could not access them. This is the reality for many schools everyday as they may not have the proper funding or resources to support music classes. So it was nice to see how this can translate to a school that may have lack of resources.

I appreciated your improvisation of musical kitchen utensils, it was smart and really speaks to finding music/instruments wherever you can. When you referenced timbre and how it can be related to some not-so-favourite people I thought about how much my not-so-favourite math teacher's voice really stuck and droned in my head, and perhaps if the timbre had changed in excitement that would have influenced my experience. Referencing things people can relate to is always helpful. The connection to Haikus was great, I think it had great meaning and connection for students. I thought your accommodations were well planned, having worked with friends with ADHD these would be beneficial. All around great works my friends!

It was very insightful, and your activities were delightful and appropriate for the grade five curriculum. It was a lovely transition to the online component, given our circumstances. I found your lesson activities to be engaging, and you provided many pointers and suggestions that could benefit us all for the future teaching of timbre. Your presentation was very clear, and you provided us with both voice-over, text, and examples of your activities to make sure we all had an exceptional understanding. Overall, well done!

Hello all! great job putting this engaging presentation together, you were able to adapt and set a standard for how we should be flexible in our learning. I enjoyed your use of the Haiku during an activity as it allows for students to understand how different words are spoken and thus sound different. I like how you said that certan words can bring about different characteristics and this is the "the colour of speech". Lastly, resources may be hard to come by in many schools, especially for music and this group did a great job using everyday materials to explain timbre. Than

I think that by introducing the lesson by having students make different sounds with common objects such as wooden spoons, pots and pans, etc., is a great and effective way of introducing the term timbre to students. It is an effective strategy for auditory and visual learners, as opposed to just explaining the term to them!

I never thought about how a haiku and timbre could be connected but I really enjoyed this demonstration as it helped me gain a greater understanding of what timbre is. Highlighting the different words to show different qualities of timbre really allowed you to see how a membrane instrument was connected to thunderous and tumble with a wood instrument. You could see how they fit really well together.

Overall well done! Your presentation was easy to follow and I loved how you incorporated the videos as if you were teaching us the students.

Hello everyone! Great job pulling this together in such a stressful time.
The instructional strategies that I found effective were splitting the class up into stations. This is a way where the students can have the opportunity to use different instruments from each of the categories of non-pitched instruments. I enjoyed this because it allows for exploration among the students, while also exposing them to a variety of different instruments, as opposed to a single instrument.
I enjoyed how the slides included both written text and verbal clips, so we could have access to two different kinds of delivery. This added to the lesson and made it easier to understand and follow.

I really enjoyed your presentation. It was well organized, and the lesson structure has a really good flow to it. The Minds On starts with getting students to explore some differences in timbre between percussion instruments (wood vs metal). In the haiku exercise, the instructor begins by modeling the action of playing the instruments to the poem. Finally, the students are able to demonstrate their understanding through the listening exercise. I liked that you gave the students a choice in what sounds they charted (3 out of 5) because this gives them some power and eliminates any frustration and discouragement they may feel if they are unfamiliar with a sound, allowing them to focus on categorizing the sounds they recognize. Great work!

It was well organized, and I loved the way the lesson came together using the three parts “Minds on” “Action” and “Consolidation”. The Minds On was brilliant as it started with getting students engaged and ready to explore some differences using timbre between percussion instruments. In the haiku exercise, Andrew begins by modelling the action of playing the instruments to the poem. From this the students are then able to demonstrate their understanding through the listening exercise. Then I loved Brett’s section that tied everything together as he outlined through the consolidation. Overall a great lesson and presentation! I learned a lot

HERE IS THE RE-UPLOAD OF MY COMMENTS:

What I did during the lesson: For the lesson itself, I enjoyed the video segments that guided me through each phase of the lesson. I believe that your use of the haiku poem was innovative and a unique way to teach timbre theory in a way I have not done before. In addition, I think it is an awesome idea to include exit cards to help consolidate the knowledge acquired in the classroom before a student leaves. This is a great way to track and monitor the proficiency of your students on an individual level.

Feedback for the presenters: For the presenters, I enjoyed that you incorporated some humour into your lesson to cut the tension between the student and teacher. This is an excellent strategy that I have seen my associate teacher use, and it is something I am becoming more comfortable with in my own lessons. AND YES ANDREW IT WAS AS GOOD AS A MOVIE! XD

Hi everyone, congratulations on a great presentation you did with the switch up of in person to online! I really enjoyed all the little extras you put in the videos, with sound effects, dogs and pictures!

You all discussed nicely how this can work in cross-curricular approaches, the use of the Haiku poem ties in with language and poetry. I also enjoyed how with each new term you gave a definition to help explain timbre and membrane. You tied in the overall expectation of C3 to your videos and slides by discussing some of the cultural forms the instruments use (for example the animal skins). I really enjoyed this and think the use of cartoons was a great touch for Grade 5! Awesome job!
