Cross Contamination of Food in the Refrigerators

The environmental problem on the photo is a cross contamination of food in the hall refrigerators. Because irresponsible students leave their food in the public fridges for long, they get expired and can transfer their bacteria to other food, poisoning it. Also the problem is that there is no rule for those who is responsible for this food and who has the right to get rid of it.

EduHK is a green-inspired campus: We can start by creating community gardens. We can allocate space on campus for community gardens where students can grow their own fruits, vegetables, and herbs. This promotes sustainability, encourages healthy eating habits, and fosters a sense of community.

Already in practice: PolyU Hk has small gardens reserved for students where they can grow fresh vegetables and herbs.

The problem here is a constant (24h) lighing in student halls (even during the day). I believe that most of the useful energy is lost and that Motion sensor lighting bulbs could be implemented to tackle this problem.

Sustainable buildings for Green campus framework

Creating sustainable buildings for a college campus involves thoughtful design and innovative strategies. Here are some solutions for each of the specified aspects:

Material Waste in Construction:

Automation in construction: Create templates and mass produce them at factory using advanced construction techniques such as 3d printing and assemble them at site.

Prefabrication: Use prefabricated components to minimize on-site construction waste. These components are manufactured off-site and assembled efficiently.

Design for Deconstruction: Plan buildings with disassembly in mind. This allows for easier material recovery during future renovations or demolition.

Efficient HVAC Systems:

Heat Pumps: Consider incorporating heat pumps into HVAC systems. They efficiently transfer heat between indoor and outdoor spaces, reducing energy consumption.

Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV): ERV systems recover heat or coolness from exhaust air and transfer it to incoming fresh air. This improves indoor air quality while minimizing energy use.Natural Ventilation in Building Design:

Orientation and Layout: Position buildings to maximize natural airflow. Orient structures to capture prevailing winds and create cross-ventilation.

Operable Windows: Design windows that can be opened to allow fresh air circulation. Use window placement strategically for effective cross-ventilation.

Atriums and Courtyards: Integrate atriums or courtyards within buildings to facilitate natural ventilation and daylight penetration.

Energy Systems:

Renewable Energy Sources: Install solar panels, wind turbines, or geothermal systems to generate clean energy on-site. These reduce reliance on non-renewable sources.

Energy-Efficient Lighting: Use LED or CFL bulbs and incorporate daylighting strategies to minimize electricity consumption.

Smart Building Controls: Implement smart sensors and automation to optimize energy usage based on occupancy and external conditions.

Sustainable design is a holistic approach that considers the entire life cycle of a building, from construction to operation and eventual decommissioning.

Encourage students to bring their own reusable containers and provide incentives for doing so, such as discounts or loyalty points.

Extra rebate (such as Hk$2-3) will be given to students who complete the food at the canteen. Positive Incentives work as students want to save more money.

Benefit: Byo scheme and reduction of food waste at canteen! Students also develop a healthy habit of reducing food wastage.

The photo was taken in front of the cafeteria on the campus. Most of the students, teachers, and staff of the campus take their lunch here.

All the food waste, including the food packaging and plastic materials, are thrown together in a single bin. This situation needs to improve with proper waste management.

Set up a proper disposal corner to dump organic food waste and plastic materials separately.

Implement a pre-ordering system through a campus meal app to reduce food waste during rush hours. Users can browse the menu, select their items, and specify pickup times. Meals are prepared in advance, allowing for quick pickup and minimizing wait times. This system streamlines the lunchtime process, saves time, and reduces food waste.
