The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was one of the key events that led to World War I. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated on this day by Bosnian Serb student Gavrilo Princip. When the news of his death reached Vienna, one of the Austro- Hungarian Capitals, they started to blame Serbia for the assassination, not the Bosnian Serb. They believed the Serbs would do anything to achieve their independent nation.

The Battle of Verdun was fought from on the Western Front in France. The battle was the longest and bloodiest of the First World War and took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse. This battle was ferocious, with approximately 400,000 French casualties, and about 350,000 German ones. Some 300,000 people were killed in total.

June to September 1916 The Brusilov offensive, also known as the "June advance". It was the Russian Empire's greatest feat of arms during World War I, and among the most lethal offensives in world history. It was led by Russian General Alexei Brusilov, who wanted to launch an offensive against Austria in order to gain territory previously lost to the Germans and Austrians, and to take pressure off France/Britain so they could efficiently knock Austria out of the War. After all, it was their greatest menace. Its results: 1,000,000 casualties and the defeat of the Austro - Hungarian Empire, from which they never recovered.

Through this series of battles, the Allies pushed the Imperial German Army back, and reclaiming lands and prizes they had previously stolen. This series of succesful fights plus a revolution breaking out in Germany due to the precarious conditions of the country led to the victory of the Allies.

The Treaty of Versailles was the peace treaty resulting from the Paris Peace Conference. As the most important treaty of World War I, it ended the state of war between Germany and most of the Allied Powers. It was signed in the Palace of Versailles, exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which led to the war. The other Central Powers on the German side signed separate treaties. The treaty also forced Germany to hand over some German territories to neighboring countries, placed other German territories under international supervision, and removed its overseas colonies, restricting its military capabilities, and it was required to pay war reparations to the Allied countries. All these repercussions created in Germany a very serious economic and political crisis, lowering German morale, and giving Hitler the perfect conditions to impose himself in the government a few years later.

After Germany and its allies started surrendering, the Paris Peace Conference was held. It was the formal meeting to set the peace terms for the defeated Central Powers. Dominated by the leaders of Britain, France, the United States and Italy. These countries were named as “The Big 4”. In addition, it resulted in five treaties that rearranged the maps of Europe and parts of Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands, and also imposed financial penalties. Germany and the other losing nations had no voice in the Conference's deliberations; this gave rise to political resentments that lasted for decades.
