His struggle of slowly losing his own voice over time, until he can no longer speak at all. He talks how depressed it had made him,  how it stripped him of his personality. He soon describes the events of how he met Oscar's Grandmother in New York, at a bakery. She talks with him on how they both have lost everything, but when she learns he is unable to speak she has a single request.
"Please marry me."
Oscar's grandfather says he felt un-easy about the situation, with the chapter ending in,
"Help."

We learn very early on in the book that Oscar is smart, but one example that stood out was when he made jewlery from Morse code from messages of his dad. "As for the bracelet Mom wore to the funeral, what I did was converted last voice message into Morse code,..." (pg. 35).
