In the late 17th century, Puritans created a theocratic society in Salem that integrated religion deeply into daily life. They followed the "City on a Hill" theory, which would mean that their town was a perfect utopia ruled by Jesus (the church). Due to the unanimous belief that the Devil had influence upon the surface world and did this through wizards and witches who would cast spells and hexes, many things such as disease and natural disaster were connected to that belief. Looking to point fingers, accusations of witchcraft began, starting with the African house servant Tituba, who told tales of magic to the young children who she cared for. More and more accusations poured out following witch hunts, and activity which would occur in the 20th century as well following Communist accusations, some stemming from petty debates over various things such as land disputes. Those accused were usually sentenced without trial, which either led to prison or death, with the only method of proving innocence was to admit you were a witch.
