In 3rd grade social studies, we can explore the relationship between people, land, and communities by connecting topics like air quality and agriculture. For example, students can learn how Washington’s geography and climate influence what we grow, and how changes in the environment (like wildfires and smoke) affect farms and the people who work on them. We can study maps to see where farming happens in our state and discuss how communities adapt to environmental challenges. By including stories of local farmers and farmworkers, we can build empathy and connect economics, geography, and civics in meaningful ways. This integration helps students see how they are part of a larger system and empowers them to think about solutions for a healthier future.

At our school, each grade level has a garden box. I think it would be interesting to make observations on the daily temperature, watering habits, air quality and plant growth.

Since my class has already been working with data during math time, this would be a natural way to extend their learning into science. We could look at simple bar graphs or pictographs showing how apple or potato yields change based on conditions such as heat, drought, or smoke. This could lead to rich discussions and help students begin making connections between environmental changes and their impact on everyday life. These are the action steps I would take with my students: use real-world data, make predictions, and encourage them to ask questions.
