Domain 7: Professional

Domain 7 explores competency standard 12, where clinicians are committed to self-awareness, responsiveness, and reflexivity in all aspects of practice (Migrant & Refugee Women's Health Partnership, 2019). For me, the most important competency standard from domain 7 is competency standard 12.1 as I believe you need to know about yourself and your own culture before you can provide care to people of different cultures. The competency standard 12.1 covers how clinicians need to have an awareness of their own culture and beliefs, and how it can impact their interactions within the healthcare setting (Migrant & Refugee Women's Health Partnership, 2019). I have developed an understanding of this standard and how I can use this standard to better my care in the workplace. Having learned that people have many different cultures and beliefs and that they may have their own requests and concerns when it comes to the care they are provided, it has shown me that even though I may believe a certain thing, that doesn't mean other people think the same way, and that once I learn that having my own boundaries is okay, then it is also okay for my patients in the future to have their own too. This understanding will be essential to me in the workplace as I want to ensure I can provide the best care I can to all my patients.

Reference:
Migrant & Refugee Women's Health Partnership.
Social determinants that impact migrant/refugees in Australia

Social determinants can create major impacts on anybody, but a group that experiences many social determinants in Australia is migrants/refugees. Many refugees who come to Australia experience the social determinant of income and social protection as they usually don't have any money with them and don't have a job. This social determinant impacts refugees a lot as they cannot make any income to provide for themselves, and people who don't understand what refugees have gone through and why they have moved tend to judge and create a stereotype of them, leaving refugees to fall into the social determinant of social protection (World Health Organisation, 2023). Another social determinant refugees experience is early childhood development as many refugees bring their children. Growing up as a child who has not been in a safe place for their first few years of life and then moving to Australia where they cannot live a secure life straight away can create many worries and impact their mental health (World Health Organisation, 2023). These children may think that it is normal to go through what they have as they have grown up this way, but once they go to school and see that not everyone else has experienced what they have, it may take a toll on them and create insecurities within themselves. Another social determinant that impacts refugees is access to affordable health services of decent quality (World Health Organisation, 2023). This impacts refugees as they don't have the money to afford health services and they don't have a way to health services. They may be unable to catch the bus, get a car, get an uber, or any transport at all, which can leave them in a stressful position, especially if they also have kids. These three social determinants majorly impact refugees as they can't live a secure life.

Reference:
World Health Organization. (2023). Social determinants of health.
