In today's more challenging early literacy curriculum, I should be more articulate in literacy instructional materials. I realize that understanding the meaning of words is critical to understanding what a child read. As a teacher I should frequently let them meet words for which pronounciation is not easily predictable. eg. (ā, å, ã)

DAY 1 - SAES - JENNEEVA AIMAREE P. ELLOREG

In the current situation of learning, teachers were forced to take extreme measures to ensure that preschoolers will be taught the necessary skills in language and numeracy. And it was challenging enough to measure their capabilities and current level in this distance learning. I observe that besides using the usual flashcards, phonetic activity, spelling exercises, also reading and comprehension exercises, we also make sure that they will learn something while enjoying. We come to use different platforms like classpoint, jamboard, and other gamified ppts to make learning interesting and enjoyable. We also assess the language and numeracy level of every learner which was done by every adviser. With those gathered data, the school launch the "Brigada Pabasa" in order to reach those learners who were left behind. And I think, because of webinars that teachers were attending from time to time, all other alternatives, techniques, and strategies to cater to all learners will be made.

Early childhood is a time when children are naturally excited about words and eager to take part in literacy learning. Teachers plays a vital role in helping children to develop and maintain a positive attitude towards learning and literacy of the students. Here are some of the developmentally appropriate practices that I think will help my students develop early literacy
Integrate language experience with children's interests, make reading responsive, offer children a variety of resources and ways to approach learning, help children develop knowledge and skills and let literacy be a social experience to them.
The key to quality early literacy learning lies within a delicate balance of providing rich, meaningful, engaging content experiences, creating classroom cultures that motivate children, honoring children's choices about what they want to learn, and encouraging their independence. When we as teachers, offer children these kinds of opportunities, literacy achievement is within every child's reach.

JENNY A. MILLOREN
In this point of time it is very hard enhance the literacy of early childhood in terms of reading and writing. I myself advocate the reading program for the children before I enter my profession. Dealing with the strategies we had in face to face was really help my students to read but now in virtual world you need to put a lot of effort to encourage your students to read. You have to think of creative ways on how you catch the attention of the child for him or her to become a independent. Reader just like mam Genvie said you have to show to the students to read even if is non fiction story because it will help them in many areas that they are lock off. Though we have limited resources for the assessing the reading skills Brigada Pagbasa help lot students to attain the domains that suffice the reading comprehension of the pupil.

As a Third Grade Teacher, when this pandemic started, I challenged myself on how to be an efficient and effective teacher to my kids. These are the things I take noted; 1.Learners struggling most in reading. -group them to slow, average and fast readers-both in English and Filipino. 2.Most of them are lack of sufficient technological tools 3. I also consider parent's capabilities to teach /assist their children. 4.I prepared materials according to their level-of reading skills. 5. Reading materials were uploaded in our gc's,fb private group-. For its Application: 1.For the whole September - those slow readers - I started with Letter Sounds-everyday-I conducted it online-thru gmeet, those who cant join I asked them to at least send a recorded audio /video-based from the recorded reading video I provided.-others-called them thru messenger. The average readers meet them twice a week, while the fast readers, every Friday. Every after meeting- with their parents-I took points on things-to do next-and acknowledged what they learned and accomplished every task I gave. (all sight words) 2.For the whole October- For the slow readers-from the sounds-gradually I introduced the phonics- for the average and fast readers- the whole month they mastered already the words, sentences and phrases. 3. For Whole month of November- Slow readers from phonetics- gradually to-2-3 syllables, some were improved to-average-level. For the average and fast readers- asked them to read short stories- with follow-up questions-for comprehension. 4.Now, December-I do not have slow readers in Filipino, In English, almost half of my class are fast readers in English, the other half -I religiously work on for it because these are my learners whom failed to really connect due to difft. situations/reasons. 5.I always have a constant communication with parent- I always ensure their positive involvement-because it is where lies-the success of my kids. 6.I always practice the "I do-You do-We do " approach. 7. Whenever I started classes-I made sure that I am connected with my kids by asking them questions "their daily routine" I let them talk as if to be "feel at Home". 8.During our lessons, I immediately stop and present pictures whenever words seem unfamiliar. Words that are mispronounced, I repetitively asked them to read it as part also of my tongue twister. 9. I also asked them to list down the words they don't understand- I explain it -then used it in simple words, I always asked their turn afterwards. 10.Used an approach to suited with their level one at a time, the moment I track her/his progress I also modified the materials. Stick to your schedule, don't just do it one time- the moment that your pupils feel you're always there- they always make sure also to show case their progress. Have the heart for children to teach, in our distant learning- make something different from their lives-"they are always the reason, where and what you are now..."

Since the start of class and experienced teaching as a new teacher in grade 3, I've seen the importance of knowledge in literacy. I’ve learned the value of when a child is aware of reading and writing, and on the first day of the seminar I’ve learned how much I still need to know as a teacher. That a teacher's importance doesn't just end with simply teaching how to count, read and write.Indeed I will continue improving my strategies ,on how to teach literacy in my own way, where learning is always with fun and challenging part.Wherein I individually assess my pupils reading ability. After this I prepare an enjoyable activity to enhance their reading ability by showing their own talents.Everytime I did this I always discover their unique way and phases of learning. And for that I can say that every child is special and unique and that I always believe that learning without fun is no learning at all.

But still I encourage those pupils to help themselves to cope up and not being left behind by their other classmates. I make to conduct home visitation or learning support center 4 times a month to train and educate them in literacy and numeracy. I prepared learning materials, learning videos and conduct online engagement for those who have gadget's to use. I check their skills in literacy by conducting online kumustahan every friday.

Today in the new normal set-up, we teachers do Online Classes, guide the parents in their questions about the modules. We consider that some learners cannot do online classes because of their personal problems. During Online Class we must explain very clearly and simplified the lesson in a short period of time for the learners to understand. To know if the learners understand the lesson we provide a quiz before ending the class for the day and have a short recap for the next online class. We ensure that our learners have learned and understand very well the lesson. For offline classes we send videos related to the lesson for the week so they can watch it again and gain more knowledge from the lesson. As a teacher teaching to the new normal, it is very challenging for us to control or to manage the class because of some hindrances like the signal and some technical problems within the teacher or the learners. We must know their strengths and weaknesses because every child is unique and has different strengths and weakness from one another.
-MervES

It is a must for teachers to be able to differentiate the instructional groupings of their students for them to be able to use varied approaches.

Children need regular discussion and learning sessions to build and develop their languages and ideas. That is why I conduct virtual meetings to incorporate knowledge, skills and vocabulary for them to use. Also, reading aloud interactive books increases their language and vocabulary. Varied instructional and reading books can be also used for them to learn other subjects. As a teacher, we have to focus on how to help them learn to read and write.
Day 1- Early Literacy: How do we teach? (MervES Elaine Doroja)

In working with Kindergarten learners, I observe the following:
1) I try to connect or establish rapport with the child. This way, I can gauge the comfort level of my student in terms of communicating or expressing him/herself. I am also able to get a glimpse of the child's level of confidence by establishing our relationship.
2) I encourage oral communication. I ask them questions, and I take time listening to their answers. I acknowledge their responses without reprimanding the wrong ones. I rephrase or clarify vague answers, and allow them to repeat when necessary. This gives me a hint which children I can ask HOTS questions, and which ones I should hone for simple WH-questions.
3) I use visual aids like pictures, and online stories.
4) In teaching letter sounds, we start by listening to the distinct beginning sound. Pictures of these objects are shown. Then I ask them to find objects around them that begin with the sound. Afterwards, I show them the letter form, and how to write the letter (big and small).
5) I accommodate different kinds of learners. For instance, I ask students who can read to say aloud the word on the screen. I also color-code the vowels and the consonants, so when I present a syllable, learners can see the different units of sounds present. I also infuse movement in my lessons, such as writing the letters in the air, or writing letters on the back. We also do music and movement activities.

Being an educator is a lifelong process because they said that we are the shaper or molder of a child’s mind. We have to adopt, do and apply whatever knowledge, process, a technique we learned to help our students gain more knowledge

.Children have individual differences different levels of thinking that is why we apply different teaching methods that can help them learn.

First, is we need to know the learner’s ability and capacity to do something in this case we know what strategies we apply to help them learn.

There are different types of teaching methods which can be categorized into four broad types.

1. Teacher-centered methods,

Here the teacher casts himself/herself in the role of being a master of the subject matter. The teacher is looked upon by the learners as an expert or an authority. Learners, on the other hand, are presumed to be passive and copious recipients of knowledge from the teacher.

2. Learner-centered methods,

In learner-centered methods, the teacher/instructor is both a teacher and a learner at the same time. In the words of Lawrence Stenhouse, the teacher plays a dual role as a learner as well “so that in his classroom extends rather than constricts his intellectual horizons”.

3. Content-focused methods; and

In this category of methods, both the teacher and the learners have to fit into the content that is taught. Generally, this means the information and skills to be taught are regarded as sacrosanct or very important. A lot of emphases is laid on the clarity and careful analyses of content. Both the teacher and the learners cannot alter or become critical of anything to do with the content. An example of a method that subordinates the interests of the teacher and learners to the content is the programmed learning approach.

4. Interactive/participative methods

This fourth category borrows a bit from the three other methods without necessarily laying emphasis unduly on either the learner, content, or teacher. These methods are driven by the situational analysis of what is the most appropriate thing for us to learn/do now given the situation of learners and the teacher. They require a participatory understanding of varied domains and factors.

Early Literacy Instruction : How do we teach? (Output Day 1) Teacher Gemma of SANES. As an experienced teacher of preschool back then, I can say that teaching literacy to preschoolers is not an easy task. It takes a lot of patience love and compassion, trainings and workshops, positive outcomes through parents testimonies and children's outputs and results ,your colleagues and principal's recommendations and observations before you could say that you made teaching a success. Aside from what I mention above teachers must be equipped with different pedagogies and must be knowledgeable enough with the different domains of learnings in dealing with the early learners. As they say children are like breakable glasses of whom are fragile and delicate that need to be handled with so much care so as to mold them into the best version of themselves. I just want to quote from a blog I read on literacy that literacy is more than reading _ it starts the moment babies hear a voice. An educator of the emergence learners he/she must understand the language and literacy development of an infants toddlers and preschoolers. He/ she must also create a language and literacy rich environment, supportive of the oral language development and has to partner with the parents / families to strengthen teaching and make cultural connection

Early literacy is learning about sounds, words and language. As a Grade III teacher, I support early literacy development by communicating with children, reading, and playing with rhyme. Children develop and learn best through everyday, fun activities like singing, talking and games. Their home language is the foundation for cognitive growth. Children and their families will feel respected and valued when their home language is acknowledged because we all know that every learning starts at home. It's up to us teachers to select the developmentally appropriate practices per age group, development observation, and engage children through activities on subjects that interest them as well.

Early literacy does not mean teaching young children how to read. Instead, it means helping children develop the skills they will need to become successful readers. Early literacy activities build rich language skills: vocabulary, self-expression, and understanding (comprehension).
As a Kindergarten teacher I try to establish rapport to my learners to feel them comfortable.
