Mr. Hooper: Preacher, Quite, Thoughtful, Neat, and does not draw attention to himself. 
The veil from his perspective is dark, shadow, lifeless, and death.
The veil to him symbolizes sin, guilt, eeriness, etc.
He does not want to see your reaction. He sees their reaction as a view of guilt.
