When Adam and Eric started thinking of the idea to make boring cleaning products not so boring, people started to use their houses and cleanliness as a reflection upon themselves, so they decided they wanted to make their products a sort of decor. This allows cleaning products to not be in the out of sight out of mind categories which then makes it so more people genuinely clean their homes in a safe and aesthetically pleasing way.

Adam and Eric noticed that most cleaning products in 1999 were ugly and most importantly toxic. Such strong and toxic scents that basically was poison being used to clean. The existing products were basically polluting while cleaning based off of how much toxins were infused into said products. So they decided they wanted to make an eco friendly cleaning product that consumers would find “pretty” so they could display the products and use them more often.

When originally starting up their products the two young entrepreneurs began creating the designs and products themselves in their apartment building, mixing up solutions and funneling them into containers. They experimented in their apartment building. Using safe and easy access products that were natural and most importantly safe and effective. Then came time to sell their products so they went to different grocery stores and practically begged the owners to shelf their products. They genuinely got shot down almost one too many times, thankfully they had the passion and grit to continue trying to get their product out there. When getting to the store they then put their products on their shelves they then started selling products and replenishing products. So they out in the work to develop and correct these products.

As young entrepreneurs Adam and Eric struggled to make money. Their business for the first two years was completely out of pocket, including making the cleaning products and figuring out packaging. They both put in roughly 45,000. Adams' grandpa had died and left him with that 45,000 and he put every cent of it into the company. That still was not enough they used 5-10 grand loans from friends and family for another two years to help them get on their feet and allow for their company to take off on its own. Finally they had a big moment in their companies journey, their first investor. Another year later they got their first investor who invested 1 Million dollars into Method.

About Adam and Eric (entrepreneurship)

Originally the two founders were cautious about their ideas as they were two guys in a cleaning business which caused them to be pretty insecure about their products. So they asked people about the products, like former cleaning product company employees, and they said “if it's so good why isn’t it an idea already” or “they are bigger than you so they will win” So they decided to go big or go home. They realized entrepreneurship is all about taking risks and it was about time for them to start making them.
About Eric
Knowing that he wanted to be an entrepreneur for as long as Eric can be remembered. Eric had the passion and grit for starting businesses and everything entrepreneurship.
About Adam
Adam was a firm believer that you don’t need to know what you’re going to do with your life, just what you will do next. Adam was surrounded by entrepreneurs (parents) Adam says he is motivated by making good changes in the world.

Expanding Products (failure)

Originally the Method design had the pump on the bottom to get the product out which led to unaware consumers breaking the bottles by accident which led to leakages within the shelves. Conveniently the products with the bottom opening were played on the top shelves meaning all the spilled product dropped down across all of the lower shelves. This was one of the first failures they came across. Next they moved to personal care such as shampoo and other products like that. This also failed. Products sat on shelves and didn’t move. Nobody would purchase these products. They obviously lost money but they knew that product failure is a part of the process so they went back to the drawing board to make their products even better.

Early on Method was losing more money than they were making. They sold bottles for only $5 and simply spent more money on the production of products. Eventually they started making money by partnering with larger corporations such as Target. Target worked with Method and ended up purchasing roughly $25,000 worth of products and gave Adam and Eric 8 weeks to sell and profit off of the products sold within the store.
