Anna was diagnosed when she was a baby. The mutation for the disease causes the 6th amino acid in the beta globin chain, glutamic acid, to be replaced with valine. Valine forms a mutated hemoglobin found in sickled red blood cells called Hemoglobin S. The Hemoglobin S molecules are later deoxygenated, which causes them to attract towards each other and cluster. This clustering affects the overall shape of the red blood cells, and makes them form that sickled shape. When red blood cells have that shape, they cluster and/or die faster, preventing the patient from having enough oxygen in their body.
