Although I am not a teacher in the formal sense as teaching in a school, my work as an education/support worker for the LGBT community working for CMHA in which I provide group and peer to peer counseling I feel it all becomes much the same. Education is facilitated in many ways, and this is my medium.

I feel protecting our fellow people is of utmost importance, and all of the human rights need to be protected. In my role I feel it essential to protect each and every person I encounter and to protect them against , discrimination, bigotry, and hatred based on their:

Age

Ancestry

Color

Disability:

Ethnic origin

Family status

Gender expression

Gender identity

Marital status

Place of origin

Race

Receipt of public assistance

Record of offenses

Sex

Sexual orientation

These all matter significantly and I vow to always protect my clients in every way I can. In dealing with them personally and showing respect, in our groups by not allowing any sort of demeaning or derogative comments to be left unspoken to.

Providing protection is part of our moral and ethical responsibilities as educators and teachers.

One of the ways I promote safety and protection is in my lectures, presentation and workshops on Diversity, Acceptance, Inclusion and Affirmation. This allows people to look inside themselves and address the conscious and unconscious biases, cultural beliefs and or family beliefs, they have that can cause the behaviors of discrimination, bigotry and hatred to surface.

Bringing education is wonderful opportunity for us to take action against these horrific behaviors and provide protection to those we are entrusted with.

Protecting from discrimination.

Since we are choosing one topic I will
choose disability.

I will be vigilant in my teaching career to
ensure that any and all member with nay form of disability are accommodated to
ensure they have the same opportunities to learn the rest of the learners.
