Dean Lewis uses pathos, ethos and logos throughout his song "Be Alright" and in the music video he created to show the hardships of break ups, but to also show how everything will be alright in the end. The text is effective in using all three strategies to convince his exes that he is going to be okay even after what they have put him through.

Lyric Analysis- Pathos

Pathos is the strategy that is most used throughout Lewis's song. He wants his listeners to hear the emotional pain in his voice to get his point across.

Right away in verse one, Lewis sings "I look up from the ground to see your sad and teary eyes/ you look away from me/ I know there's something you're trying to hide/ I reach for your hand, but its cold/ you pull away again/ and i wonder whats on your mind." This uses pathos by explaining the moment that you begin to find out the harsh truth about what's happening; getting cheated on. It can be a very sad moment.
Then in the next lines "Nothing heals the past like time/ and they can't steal/ the love you're born to find" shows that the only way you can get better is by being patient and having hope. It's an eternal truth that after time, things just get better. This verse can bring a feeling of relief and optimism.
The final example of Lewis using pathos is when the lyrics say, "Everything deleted like past/ yeah it was gone/ and when I touched your face/ I could tell you were moving on." He uses a simile to show how easily things can disappear and how the past can just "be erased." It can bring a hard realization that not everything is permanent and stays in your life forever.

Lyric Analysis-Logos

Lewis uses logos by referencing many personal experiences that he's been through to show that a lot of people go through the same thing and that you're not alone.

At the beginning of verse two, it goes "You say the cigarettes on the counter/ weren't your friends/ they were my mates." Lewis's friend once found out he was getting cheated on by his girlfriend by the cigarettes on the counter that he didn't smoke.
Another use of logos is "I know you love her/ but it's over mate/ it doesn't matter/ put the phone away." When Lewis was going through a break up, he went to his brothers house. His brother Reese said "Quit looking at your phone, it's over. Don't worry about what she is doing" (Genius).
Towards the end of the song, the last couple of lines say "So I asked to look back at all the messages you'd sent/ and I know it wasn't right/ but it was f*cking with my head." Lewis was looking back at him and his exes conversations and realized it just makes things worse and it messes with your feelings more than just leaving the situation alone would.

Subject- The song is based off of multiple break ups that Lewis has gone through and more specifically, getting cheated on by one of his ex girlfriends. The idea of the song is that you should be hopeful because in the end things will work out.
Occasion- In the lyrics he is at the end of a relationship and starting to move on. He is hurting, but he is hopeful. In the video he appears to be at a dark house in the woods and then ends up in a maze to symbolize the end of the relationship.
Audience- The song is clearly wrote to his exes and some of his friends exes based on the background of the lyrics.
Purpose- The purpose is to show the hardships of breakups, but also to show that pain is only temporary. You should surround yourself with good people and everything will "be alright."
Speaker- Dean Lewis
Tone- Most verses are sad to make the listeners feel the emotional weight of the song, but the chorus is hopeful to show that things get better.
