Throughout the play, Blanche is haunted by the deaths of her ancestors, which she attributes to their “epic fornications.” In order to avoid accepting reality, Blanche withdraws completely into herself, revealing her irrationality. To escape completely, in any case, Blanche should come to see the outside world as that which she envisions in her mind. Blanche changes the outside world to fit her fantasies. The line between fantasy and reality is fluid in both the physical and mental realms.
