FIRE AND ICE BY:AMITRASUDAN

Robert Frost’s poem “Fire and Ice” is a strong symbolic poem where the fire is used as the emotion of desire and ice, that of hatred. He has used the idea of two groups who have their own possible explanation for the end of the world. One is of the opinion that fire alone can destroy each and every possibility of life on Earth while the other thinks that if ice as a result of extremely low temperatures could cover the earth’s surface, it would lead to the end of the world. Both the components are compared with self-destructing human emotions: desire and hatred. The poet is original of the opinion that he has been very closely associated with the “fiery desires” and considers it capable of bringing human beings on the verge of destruction. Thus, he considers fire as more competent for destruction. But then he thinks that “icy hatred” is just as capable of ruining humans, though slowly and steadily. Therefore, if Earth was to end twice, ice would be just as good as fire. If a fire would lead to rapid destruction, ice would lead to silent damage. Similarly, if the fire is pure passion, ice is pure reason. Thus, the poem, very artistically, underpins the philosophy that we let our emotions rule us and if don’t control them they will surely bring us all on the verge of chaos.

"A Long Walk to Freedom" by Nelson Mandela captures South Africa's struggle for liberation. On May 10, 1994, Mandela took the oath as the country’s first Black president, marking a new era of democracy. In his speech, he expressed gratitude to dignitaries present and assured South Africans that the era of racial oppression had ended. The ceremony included singing two national anthems to symbolize unity, commemorating the resilience against racial segregation.

Mandela reflected on the years of racial exploitation, where Black South Africans were oppressed by the White minority. He emphasized that hatred is taught and that individuals can also learn love. Mandela noted that true bravery is not the absence of fear, but the ability to overcome it. This resilience defines a person’s character and helps them endure adversity.

Mandela explained the dual obligations each person has: to family and to the community. He realized, as he matured, that his perceived freedom was only an illusion; he was bound by the chains of racial injustice, as were all South Africans. Mandela believed that freedom is essential for both the oppressed and the oppressors, for those who deny freedom to others are themselves imprisoned by hatred and prejudice.

Mr.Loisel

Unlike his wife, Matilda, he is content with their simple life, finding happiness in small pleasures like a humble potpie. When he brings home the coveted invitation to the minister's ball, he shows a genuine eagerness to please his wife, saying, “I thought it would make you happy.” However, Mr. Loisel is not entirely selfless. He initially hides that he has saved 400 francs, intending to buy a hunting rifle to enjoy outings with friends. His quiet excitement over the gun reveals a personal aspiration he keeps from Matilda, suggesting he can be a bit selfish in wanting something just for himself. Yet, when Matilda expresses her distress over lacking a suitable dress for the event, he immediately sacrifices his savings for her. This decision, despite his private longing, demonstrates his loyalty and willingness to put her happiness above his own desires. After the loss of the necklace, Mr. Loisel’s resilience shines through as he tirelessly retraces their steps, puts out newspaper ads, and borrows a massive sum to replace the necklace. Over the following decade, he works extra jobs, copying documents late into the night without complaint, all to pay off the debt. His enduring dedication highlights his determination to support Matilda, even at great personal cost. Through Mr. Loisel’s actions, we see a devoted husband who quietly balances his own modest dreams with unwavering loyalty and sacrifice for his wife.

- Jeremy Philip

Ausable- The Midnight Visitor

Ausable, a secret agent in Robert Arthur's story "The Midnight Visitor," is a unique character who breaks the typical spy mold. He lacks the suave, athletic appearance commonly associated with spies, instead appearing clumsy and somewhat overweight. This physical description adds an element of surprise to his character, as it contrasts sharply with his actual capabilities. His unassuming look often leads others to underestimate him, which Ausable uses to his advantage.

Despite his appearance, Ausable is exceptionally intelligent and quick-witted. His sharp mind is his greatest asset, allowing him to outsmart opponents in high-stress situations. For instance, when he is confronted by Max, a rival spy, he fabricates a story about a balcony outside his hotel room to trick Max, which ultimately leads to Max’s downfall. This resourcefulness and ability to think on his feet demonstrate Ausable’s skill in manipulating situations to his benefit.

Ausable's calm and composed demeanor further contributes to his success as a spy. He rarely appears anxious, even in dangerous scenarios. His collected nature enables him to stay focused and strategically handle high-pressure moments, like when Max threatens him with a gun. Ausable’s calmness, combined with his subtle humor, adds to his charm and makes him seem nearly fearless.

In addition to his composure, Ausable is incredibly resourceful. He quickly assesses his surroundings and comes up with creative solutions. Despite his physical limitations, he turns situations around to his favor. His improvisation skills showcase his adaptability and street-smart intelligence, traits that are vital for a spy. In this way, Ausable’s character serves as a reminder that appearances can be deceiving and that intelligence often trumps physical strength.

She has pockmarks from a bout of smallpox, which adds to her insecurities and makes her feel undesirable. Bholi is not considered conventionally attractive.

Siddartha gautama was a descendent of a royal family. His early years were spent sheltered for the harshness of reality and studying holy scriptures. Around the age of 25, he had crossed pasths with a sick man, an old man, and a funeral procession, and finally a monk begging for alms. These sights had moved him so. He wandered for seven years to seek enlightenment and finally sat down under a peepal tree, where he vowed to stay there until enlightment came to him. After seven days, enlightenment finally came to him. At that point he was named Buddha.

Buddha had preached his first sermon at the city of Benares. A grienving mother named Kisa Gotami had come to him, she carried her dead child in denial of the same, asking Buddha for a cure to heal her dead child. Rather than offering her a superficial solution, he imparts a profound truth, of the impermanence of life and the inevitability of death. His approach was gentle and patient, guiding Kisa Gotami to acceptance.

As a prosperous farmer and village revenue officer, he enjoys a respectable position in the community. However, his views on education and women's roles are shaped by societal expectations.

Initially, Ramlal is dismissive of Bholi's potential, considering her a "fool" due to her speech impediment. He is more concerned with marrying her off than educating her, reflecting the traditional mindset that prioritizes a daughter's marriage over her development. However, when pressured by the Tehsildar to send Bholi to school, he reluctantly agrees.

Despite his initial indifference, Ramlal's perspective undergoes a subtle shift as Bholi's transformation unfolds. He witnesses her newfound confidence and intelligence, which challenges his preconceived notions. While he still adheres to certain societal norms, he is also open to change.

Ramlal's character highlights the tension between tradition and progress, showcasing the evolving attitudes towards women's education and empowerment in rural India. Anne yearns for true love and wanted someone to love her for her inner qualities rather than her hair.
