Hi 🤬! After watching your video about your family outing, my heart was filled with warmth and it made me appreciate the rare opportunities I get to spend with all of my family members. To me, the most memorable parts of your video was when your family decided to eat at a Thai restaurant because your grandma loves seafood as well as the time when all of you went to get bubble teas together. And even though you and your brother don’t like to exercise, you still managed to walk along the seawall of the Stanley Park with your parents. Your food preferences or hobbies may be different, but each of you still took each others’ liking into consideration. I think that’s what being a family is about - being able to put aside the differences and enjoy precious family time together! I really enjoyed watching your video and I think you did a great job on this project :)

Hello Helen! I really enjoyed your movie project! I have actually been recommended to watch this by friends and have watched clips together with them in high school, but your movie project has convinced me to watch the full movie. In your review, you said "the process of first love is not bound by cultural beliefs and practices", and I found this really inspiration/touching, and I agree. Despite Western and Asian cultural differences, I think love isn't restricted by culture, and that it can be enjoyed/understood by people of many different cultures. I agree that despite living in different generations, many people will still be able to enjoy this film; I think my mother will also love this film, and she, like your mom, also grew up in China during the Cultural Revolution. I think, as cheesy as this sounds, love is an emotion that's understood across different languages/cultures, and this is why so many people (including my friends at high school) have enjoyed this film and have recommended I watch it. I really enjoyed your video! It was really well made; it had good, explanatory clips from the movie that matched what you were talking about.

Hello KoLong! I really enjoyed your essay. I am not that knowledgeable about sports/basketball, and this movie review piqued my interests. I found your essay relatable in a lot of ways, as my family moved from China to Canada (they were also considering America) so I could grow up in a better environment/have a better education. My parents undoubtedly faced lots of hardships/racism, and I did as well growing up. However, I agree - with more and more Asian families immigrating to Canada/US, their influence has helped to rectify this. Jeremy Lin's story in the movie, although exaggerated to be more interesting, is very inspiring. The way he achieved his dreams and became an icon for 1st generation Chinese-Canadians/Chinese-Americans to look up to is important, and I am glad to have read your essay and become more knowledgeable about Linsanity and Lin's influence on Chinese-Americans/Canadians. Your essay was very organized, interesting, and sectioned off very neatly. I also liked the pictures you added as they helped me get to know Lin better.

I really enjoyed your narration, your mom/sister's guest Q&A appearance, and your honest opinions about the love story in Cape No. 7. I found it relatable when you gave us your true opinions about the love story between YouZi and Ajia; about how although their story is a good one, it isn't very realistic. I appreciated your blunt honesty. However, I love that although you and your mother share difference opinions about what makes this film memorable, both of your passion for this movie still shone through. I liked how despite your difference in opinions, and although you were from different generations living in a different country, you both still found it memorable and shared your love for the film and the film's story for us.
I really liked how your mother talked about how happy she was about the film being well-received, and that the film represented Taiwan/Taiwanese people well, as well as how the movie showed how beautiful the sea was. I liked the clips you used, as well as the way you spoke - your speech made me feel comfortable and welcomed and captured my interest.

I've never watched this movie before, but watching you video made me very interested in looking it up and watching it myself. I liked that based on what you've described of the plot, the movie seems to challenge a lot of social norms, particularly in the way that the women in the film are portrayed as promiscuous and more than just two dimensional, bland characters that they usually are portrayed as in Western film. I especially liked that you talked about your parent's personal connection to this movie, as well as the historical significance behind the movie's political climate. I think you did a really great job at looking at this movie beyond the superficial level :)

I've also watched this movie before but your interpretation of it was very interesting, especially when you compared it with 红楼梦. I resonate with your thoughts on how the freedom to choose makes us more picky and less tolerating to our significant other. I think my mom would've had the same opinion as your mom, perhaps they prefer traditional aspects about culture and history other than high school romance which may seem childish to them. I have a few questions for you: Did you like the ending of the movie? Given the opportunity, what would you change? Also, if you like watching Taiwanese romance comedy movies like this one, I recommend Our Times 《我的少女时代》 if you haven't already seen it.

High School Musical was one of my favourite movies when I was young also, so watching your review also made it very nostalgic for me. I love watching movies so therefore, I would like to share a movie with you that both my mom and I enjoyed watching. In my essay, I introduced the movie, "Dying to Survive". This is a very touching and influential movie which was based on a true event in China. Many of its citizens were suffering from Leukaemia because they were unable to afford the high costs of the medicine. Therefore, a man called Chengyong decides to smuggle cheap and untested pharmaceuticals from India. Even though he knows that it was a crime but he still did it because he wanted to save these patients.This movie not only shed light on the social issue of poverty but an extraordinary man who risked his life to save many more around him. I hope you will love this movie as much as I do!

Hey Helen! My mom also really likes this movie and keeps telling me to watch it. I kept hearing that it made people cry so I wasn't sure about it but after watching your review I feel like I really need to watch it now! I liked how you said the moral is to enjoy our youth and do what we think is right. Your essay was written beautifully and I had a great time reading through it as I’ve already seen Mulan, but reading through your unique perspective also granted me with a new found respect for the movie itself. I could tell your personal comparisons were really meaningful, especially when discussing the amount of pressure that you are subjected too and the many traditional Chinese practices that you still partake in due to the very traditional nature of your family. Your comment on how this movie may not accurately represent the transformation of China to westerners is also something I heard from my grandparents as well during my movie review. There concern of China’s reputation to foreigners was their first immediate concern and they also felt that the overly traditional nature of my film may have posed a problem. Hi Jasmine! I actually watched this movie the day it was released and it really touched me. It really moved me to see Cheng Yong having a change in his mindset, from someone who only cared for wealth to being so selfless. The most touching moment was when all the patients took off their masks to show appreciation for Cheng Yong. This movie is completely different compared to the movies from our parents generation and I also agree that we hold the power to change the future through helping others. The quote you added into your essay also moved me since that really was what Cheng Yong strived for in the end. I’m so glad you chose this movie and can tell you worked hard on your review. I really enjoyed watching your film review! You captured the essence of the film really well and definitely made me interested in watching it in the future. As Iris mentioned above, I also liked your honesty when reviewing this film, you didn't hold anything back when you voiced your opinions that this love story wasn't realistic.

Personally, I really enjoyed the part when you had the Q&A with your mother. She brought up many interesting points and offered a fresh perspective. When she brought up the historical references in the movie regarding the rocky relationship between Taiwan and Japan it brought back memories of my talking to Chinese people of older generations, many who remember the Chinese civil war and their conflicts with Japan.

All in all, I really liked you review and you raised many interesting points. I will definitely check this out in the future!

Hi Julia, I'm Sean (杨易宣). I have actually seen this movie recently in theatres and this was definitely a masterpiece. On top of the capitvating suspence and mixture of humour, there were plenty of symbolic elements that contrasts the societal struggle between the rich and poor as you highlighted. Many people focus on how the film focuses on korean society, but I believe its a broader reflection of the societal class sysem present in every society on earth. The film reveals a stark reality that we live in a system in which the rich rides on the labors of the poor and one scene that really illustrates that is when the father replaced the old resident in the bunker trying to evade the police, showing that there will always be a rich person living upstairs and a poor person living below. What makes this film so amazing is not because it highlights issues such as the widening gap between the rich and poor, but because it is able to reveal the explosive weight of reality that we can all relate to. What was your favorite part of the film? Overall, great review!

Hi Victor, I'm Sean (杨易宣). I really enjoyed your movie review of The Captain! The biggest takeaway I got from your review was the importance of maintaining professionalism and cooperation. I liked how you pointed out that overcoming monumental challenges is not simply about heroism, but instead involves a rigorous process of unity and teamwork. This reminds me of a time when I was on a flight that was in a very dangerous situation. During landing, the wheels of the plane were not coming out and we were forced to fly in circles for a few hours. Despite the panic and inconvenience, the pilots regularly reassured us that everything was going to be alright and that they were doing everything in their power to fix the problem. The level of professionalism in prioritizing passenger safety was well done and we were able to land safely after the issue was fixed. Had the pilots not handled the situation with care and precision, my life that day could have been at serious risk if they decided to conduct an emergency landing without calmly considering every alternative. Overall, I loved your analysis!

Hi Qi, I'm Sean (杨易宣). I really enjoyed your movie review of The Bravest. This movie reminds me of the Tianjin explosions in 2015 when over 150 people were killed in a series of explosions due to overheated containers at a storage facility. Over 100 of the casualties were firefighters. I agree with you in that society as a whole tend to overlook the importance of the role of being a firefighter, but it's large-scale events such as these that illustrate their bravery and sacrifice for public safety. Like you mentioned, their role goes beyond simply firefighting as they are the first responders that arrive at the scenes of medical emergencies, even before ambulances. This just shows how significant being a firefighter really is. Overall, I really enjoyed your movie review!

Personally, I enjoyed the part where you interviewed your mother. When you asked her why she brought you to watch this film when you were a kid was definitely relatable! Many times our parents will think of creative ways for us to learn and enjoy ourselves!

I really enjoyed reading your film review, I have seen this film myself and it was inspiring as an Asian-American kid who also loves playing basketball. Not only that, but as you discussed, his story represents many of the struggles immigrant families face when they come to America. A lot of the discrimination and difficulty discussed was also faced by my family when we first came so this hits home for me. Additionally, as children of first-generation immigrants we can all relate to the sacrifices our parents have made just to provide a better life for us.

I thought your entire video was very well put together. I think your synopsis was very concise and intriguing since the scenes you included were all entertaining, but still relevant to the main idea of the plot- a balance that is usually hard to achieve. That part really captured my interest.

My favourite part of your video, aside from the summary scenes, would probably be your interview with your mom. I thought the interview portion was very endearing as you related your questions back to your childhood.
From watching your project, I realized that I too, have seen this movie with my family as a child as well! brought back many vague memories of watching Chinese movies with my family.

Only improvement I can think of you probably be the absence of English subtitles during your own opinion of the movie- but that wasn't really an issue.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I know nothing about basketball so I am assuming that each quarter you referred to in the video was a reference to basketball, which I thought was very creative and it really caught my interest. Because your plot synopsis was so good and concise, I feel like I know everything there is to know about the plot, but yet, I still want to watch the movie.

From your intergenerational analysis, I agreed with aspects of your opinion, and I also side with your mom on some of her opinions, such as, how Monica shouldn't have ruined Quincy's engagement.

Last of all, I thought your editing was very good, especially the soundtrack. Each of the background instrumentals really emulated the moods of each scene very well, the it complimented the points you were making very well.

The way the dad cooks is very aesthetically pleasing, it was almost like ASMR. I really like how the 'wrote' not he video and its very immersive. I think this had a great affect on viewers as we follow you wrote and guides us how to understand each picture. I absolutely loved watching your movie review. You explained the movie so clearly and with so much detail, but even still I want to watch this movie! I agree with you and think the love story between the two protagonists isn't very realistic, but at the end of the day it is still a good story to watch.

I also agree with your opinions. I don't think someone cam fall in love with someone else that quickly, and in reality, no one would move or stay in a country for someone that they met a very short time ago, it just isn't realistic.

Hi Crystal! Your movie review is very powerful! I feel that all the students in the heritage Chinese class can relate to Billi's experiences in when visiting Asia. It really hit me hard when the Uncle stated the difference between Eastern and Western societies are. As a person who has family still living in Asia and visit them frequently, I can clearly see how the culture there differs. Large family gatherings and dinner consisting of sharing dishes at a large round table are some examples to think of. Your examples of what a white lie might be in different culture really makes me think in life what lies do we make for the betterment of the people around us? I really enjoyed reading your review on this movie, Mulan. I thought that your analysis was very clear and powerful especially your description of Mulan as a character who has a high level of resiliency. I love that you made that comparison of yourself to the toughest guy, 李尚, in the movie HAHA, because you are, Mr. Tough guy. Honestly, what I love the most was the format of your paper because while reading your paper I can relate it to the colors and the pictures on the side which definitely brought back memories of watching this classic Disney movie when I was still living in Guangzhou as a kid during those morning dimsum with that dumb playgrounds and huge tv.

Only improvement I would suggest is you could talk about the intention of this story, which is to showcase that women can be strong like men as shown by Mulan's level of high resiliency. Which certain challenges the old traditional Chinese view of women's role in society during that era.

Hi Ruth :) I’m from the other section of CHIN241! I happened to choose yours because you chose one of my favourite childhood musicals “Highschool Musical”. I really enjoyed the little edits that you added in it (e.g like the change of perspective throughout the interviews, the bonus clip etc.) it really shows that you put a lot of thought and effort. I also agree with your thoughts and personal opinions, because despite the fact that its storyline may not be as complex, it definitely is a wholesome and classic movie to watch. I really enjoyed your analysis of this movie. Although I have never seen this movie, but I definitely watched the 射雕英雄传 series on TV during every summer when I visited China back then, and it happens that this played year after year I swear... I like how you have a very insightful understanding of some of the actors in this movie and related them back to their character in the film, which showcases how much thoughts and effort the producers put into filming this film. I really like that you picked this movie to review because Jacky Cheung is in it, haha, because he used to be one of my favorite KTV go to's because his songs are slow and easy to read the subtitles. I really enjoyed your video. I watched it when it came out in theatres, and your review reminded me of why I liked the film again.
I really liked the plot summary you gave us, and I found it really interesting how it related to your parents’ situation.
I also appreciated how you explained the difference in class and that sometimes having money doesn’t mean it is spent wisely. As well as how different social classes can impact one’s love - especially love life. That was a big theme in Crazy Rich Asians and I’m glad you really touched upon it for us viewers.

Right at the get go, when I saw the names Troy and Grabriella in the title I was interested. High School Musical was such a big part of my life back in elementary school so watching your movie review really gave me nostalgic feelings. I thought your plot synopsis was very good and concise, you didn't leave out any significant details but still managed to keep that section at a good length.

Hi KoLong! I am from the other class, but your essay topic really intrigued me because I am a huge fan of Jeremy Lin and wanted to think back to the days of Linsanity! Your essay was thoroughly well written and your perspective on what he had gone through in his life to get to where he is now is super relatable to Chinese Canadian students. I also watched this movie when it came out and really enjoyed how it was funny and romatic but also how it had cultural values built into it. Your editing skills are also truly amazing and I like how you added background music to make the video more holistic. I also think that this movie can help chinese teenagers raised in western countries understand why their parents do things the way that they do, such as not telling the elderly that they are passing away soon. It was very interesting how you related the mindset of the chinese parents to western culture through "white lies", but I believe that it can be important to tell someone they are about to die so they can enjoy every last second and cherish their life! Hi CRYSTAL!!! I really like your movie choice. It really exemplifies the way that we grew up versus growing up in China and the different cultural values that we face. When someone in your family is sick in Western cultures, you would usually tell them, while in Chinese culture it is common to evade the truth. Growing up in a Western country we are just like Billie, we don't quite understand the choices that Chinese families make, the Chinese families don't understand the choices that we make (such as Billie living alone in NYC and paying rent etc. instead of living with her family) You explained it very clearly and thoughtfully I loved it! I actually have previously watched this movie by myself before but your review was also still a really nice refresher. I especially liked the dynamic between Sharpay and her twin Ryan. The love story between Troy and Gabriella is too superficial for me to enjoy (unpopular opinion) but I think you captured the overall plot of the movie very nicely. I watched this movie a while back as well and loved it. Your plot was very easy to understand and everything flowed together very nicely. I agree that people shouldn't be defined by their looks however I also believe that if it makes themselves happy to change their look, I would support that as well. In terms of you parent's perspective, I completely relate since our parents are from a different and more conservative generation which is why they might still be hesitant towards topics such as plastic surgery.

I really enjoyed watching your movie review, as I personally reviewed a basketball film myself! I thought the movie itself was interesting. I watch sports too so I could understand what athletes have to deal with, especially when one gets injured and needs to go through rehab. I also really liked the way you connected the movie with your mom's point of view. It's totally understandable how some parents don't want their kids playing sports, as you put it, it's more of a modern/Western thing to do. However, I personally think both sides need to be respected, so it's cool to see that you still have this passion today! Although I'm personally not a fan of romance movies, I connected with the athletic side of it, especially dealing with injuries and practicing hard to get to the top. Hi Ash, you made a fantastic choice in choosing Crazy Rich Asians. I also really loved watched the movie. It is the first time in 20 years with an all asian main cast, and that really shows the direction Hollywood is moving towards. Hello Annabelle!. My name is Edward. I am from CHIN 241 001. Your movie report caught my eye and so I decided to read it. I personally do not watch a lot of movies, but this movie looks really interesting. The movie does seem to follow a very cliché plot where two people who were enemies fall in love, but eventually fall in love, and suffer through hardships. However, you clearly explained that the movie does indeed have more meaning than what is shown on the surface. You stated that the movie demonstrates to us how we should love who we love instead of being in arranged marriages who which I definitely agree. I believe that everyone should be free to love regardless who they are. I really liked reading your mother’s views of the movie and how it compared to the older version. Seeing how your mother was influenced by western culture to have a combination of Chinese and American view on marriage was very insightful. you can really see the difference between how different cultures view marriage. Chinese culture always seems to be a very materialistic culture, where everything that is done is for gain or profit. I also liked how you pointed out the difference in education system. You pointed out many differences that Asian cultures have when it comes to education such as how in schools here, teachers no not post everyone’s grades in front of the whole school. They keep them private, and if they do post it, they use student numbers instead of the student’s names. However, in Asian cultures, not only do they post the grades, they include the student's name and have place they got. They mainly do this because they want to ‘embarrass’ students into improving their grades. All in all, I found your report to be very attention grabbing. Good job! - Edward Yin (殷煜越）

I thought your movie review was really well organized and put together. You gave a lot of details for the summary and analysis. Although I personally don't like historical films, you reviewed it in a way that was interesting and intriguing.
I thought the interview process with your mother was eye-opening, to see someone in a different generation give their thoughts. It is definately special to reflect back on your childhood and to remember why she brought you to watch this film. I think everyone can relate to that somehow. I thought the audio for the interview could have been a little louder though. But overall, your review gave a strong impression. Great job!

I actually saw this movie trailer before but didn't happen to watch it. After watching your video, it sparked my interest more and I think I'll actually go watch it! I like how you gave an in-depth narration to explain the movie. It's nice to hear that you watched this movie with your mom and had some mom-daughter bonding time haha. Also, I resonate with what you said near the end about how your mom's generation mostly watched films about WWII. My dad is addicted to WWII movies and dramas (there are so many of those), he never gets sick of watching them and sometimes get very emotional since it hits close to his heart. Have you ever watched that type of movie genre with your mom before?

Hey Helen, this is actually one of my favourite movies. My Taiwanese friend recommended it to me when I was asking for good movie recommendations. The song is also one of my favourites too! I've recommended this movie to so many people because I also feel that a good movie is the same for any generation. Although the movie might be a bit exaggerated, I believe that's what makes movie so good. It's to experience something that we wouldn't have experienced in our lifetime. I watched this movie a few times before and still love it a lot. I like how your review captures the key concept in this movie (definition of beauty and such) and summarizes it very well. I agree with you that one shouldn't go too far to chase after vanity such as beauty , after all, physical beauty can only lasts so long before you get old. One should instead develop their qualities and become a better individual. Of course, looks do matter to an extent, it can help you gain attention and receive opportunities you otherwise would not have gotten, like how the main character got noticed only after she got plastic surgery even though her voice is the same. I think my parents would have similar opinions as your parents as they believe hard working qualities beat all else. Lastly, I think your review is very well put together and it was a nice read!

I've never watched this movie before but I've seen other similar remakes of 三國演義 as a kid.

Your movie synopsis is very concise and I like how you mention the timeline, as it is quite important to note. I also find it pretty neat that you translated those lines where Cao Cao made a speech into english to make it more understandable. I agree with you that Red Cliff focuses more on big production rather than on the historical details, but I also agree with your mom in that the visuals will attract more young people to watch, which may stem their interest in learning more about 三國演義.

I think 三國演義 is significant to the Chinese culture, as many phrases from this novel are still commonly used today, such as ”萬事俱備只欠東風“. Lastly, I really enjoyed your movie review and you did an amazing job! :)

First of all, great job on the video! I have the same passion for football (soccer) as you do for basketball! :) Even now, I still like to train on my own to pass the time, or just to get my mind off things. I've had 2 ACL tears, so I know how depressing not playing a sport can feel like. It's great that you're still enjoying basketball, and doing something you're good at; i feel like having a true passion is something special, not many people have that in this day and age so your video was very refreshing. The video was very well made, and the purpose of your video was made very clear. I feel like the stigma of girls playing sports is starting to fade away so hopefully girls in the future wouldn't be to put off perusing their athletic dreams. Again, great job! :)
