Venus can be best described with two words: cloudy and hot. The entire surface of Venus is constantly covered by clouds. These clouds are made up mostly of carbon dioxide which has a greenhouse affect keeping in the Sun's heat like a giant blanket. As a result Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system. It is even hotter than Mercury, which is much closer to the Sun.

For many years, scientists wondered if life could exist on Mars, sometimes called the Red Planet. This planet, which is about half the size of Earth, isn’t as much like Earth as scientists previously thought. Giant canyons and crevices mark the surface and scientists believe Mars once had lots of water. Today, though, only a little ice can be found. Scientists believe that ice lies beneath the surface. The surface of Mars is covered with rock and red dust made from iron. Mars has huge volcanoes and craters. The temperature is very cold, but it might have been warmer a few million years ago.

Jupiter, the fifth planet from the sun, is the largest planet in the solar system. It is the first of the “gas giants” and has no surface, though it may have a rocky core. Although it is only 1/1000th as massive as the sun, it is more than double as massive as all of the other planets in the solar system combined. Jupiter’s atmosphere is separated into different bands and gives the planet the appearance of having whitish and reddish layers with various spots, swirls and bubbles. Jupiter’s most notable feature, other than its size, is the great red spot, a football shaped area of intense storms.

Saturn, the sixth planet from the sun, is one of four “gas giants.” It is easily recognized by its set of rings. The rings were originally discovered by Galileo in 1610, although he did not know what he was looking at and instead described Saturn ashaving “ears.” Saturn’s rings are made mostly ofice and rock. Chunks range in size from a penny to a car. The rings have a total diameter of over 185,000 miles, though individual rings are no more than 6/10th of a mile thick.

Uranus is the 7th planet from the Sun. It is more than twice as far from the Sun as Saturn. Uranus is an ice giant like its sister planet Neptune. Although it has a gas surface, like the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, much of the interior of the planet is made up of frozen elements. As a result, Uranus has the coldest atmosphere of all the planets in the Solar System. The surface of Uranus is made up of mostly hydrogen gas with some helium gas as well. The gas atmosphere makes up about 25% of the planet. This atmosphere is stormy, but not nearly as stormy or active as Saturn or Jupiter. As a result, the surface of Uranus is fairly featureless and uniform.

Pluto is a dwarf planet. A dwarf planet travels around, or orbits, the sun just like other planets. But it is much smaller. Pluto is not very big. It is only half as wide as the United States. Pluto is smaller than Earth's moon. This dwarf planet takes 248 Earth years to go around the sun. If you lived on Pluto, you would have to wait 248 Earth years to celebrate your first birthday. One day on Pluto is about 6 1/2 days on Earth. Pluto is about 40 times farther from the sun than Earth is. This dwarf planet has five moons. Its largest moon is named Charon (KAIR-ən). Charon is about half the size of Pluto. Pluto's four other moons are named Kerberos, Styx, Nix and Hydra.
