The Three Things He Couldn't Tell Her

He'd known her for so long, and yet there were still three things he could never tell her.

The first was that he would never love her back. They had a beautiful friendship, but he would never be able to reciprocate her feelings. He would never love her, or any other woman.

The second was that he wasn't the same person on the inside that he was on the outside. His jovial, extroverted demeanor was a facade masking his callous and unfeeling nature. After all, such an aptitude at deception was necessary in his line of work.

The third thing was that he'd been hired to kill her. The thought was unbearable, as she was his dearest friend. But money was money, and there was no way to feed his family with something better than stray cats without it. The back alleys were bristling with them, of course-but they tasted like human secretions and mildew. At best, they were tasteless strips of beef jerky with congealed blobs of plastic imbedded in them. The hit was scheduled for 1 a.m. that night, and he planned to execute his orders swiftly. He negotiated with the Chief for something painless-maybe cyanide that he could dissolve in her water-but the Chief denied his request, claiming that such elegant devices were for his high-profile associates only. Thus, he had no choice but to use the axe.

He snuck into her room at 1, axe in hand. He paused, but moved closer, drawing his axe. he raised it, then swung. her head came clean off. He then moved off to the Chief. He brought her head as proof.
"I'm pleased that you completed your task successfully," the Cheif announced. The man received his payment, thanked the chief, and walked to the marketplace. But then, they attacked...

The Runaway

He was best friends with a girl. It had become clear to him that over many years of friendship she had begun to have feelings for him. That is the first thing he could not tell her. He would never have true feelings toward her. Not with all that he knew.
The second is where he came from. She had never been to his house but she never asked questions. He told her that his at-home situation was not good and that he preferred to go to her house. He had told her he had been adopted. and moved to this new family. She never asked because she did not want to be rude and she thought it was a sore subject for him. She knew more than almost anyone how that situation can be. She had been adopted eventually after going through many foster homes. The truth was he had no home, no family, and he lived on the streets. He knew if he told her this she would want to help him. He could not risk it though because he ran from a foster home many miles away and did not want to go back. Who knows they might not even take him back after he ran and stole from them. He had thought if he stole all the valuables he could make a nice life for himself. All he got was a misdemeanor but was never caught. That is another reason he could never ever go back.
The third is something shocking he found along the way. At the foster home he had found his file and it showed his mother's address. It also said that he had a sister and she had been adopted recently. He went to his mother's address, but she refused to take him in. He walked the streets until he found a spot to lie down. That is where she found him. He recognized her from the file. She was his sister. He could not believe he found her, but he could not tell her yet he had to make sure. Years went by and he became positive it was her. Then she started liking him and he could never tell her in fear of losing the only person he had left to trust.

Liar

He pretended to love her. He really did. He was a very convincing liar, or actor, call it what you will. But he would never tell her that, because she loved him, and he had to keep up appearances. A perfect young man, with a perfect girlfriend, perfect grades, perfect friends and family, perfect everything. He had plenty of albis, and could get his father to pay his way out of problems. That made him the least suspect, because he was perfect and no reason to do what he did. No one suspected a thing.
He would never tell her why he was so rich. It wasn't important. He would never let her in the basement, no matter how many times she asked, because that's where they kept the bodies before they disposed of them. But to her, that was his father's study and not even he was allowed down there because he might break something. Another lie, That's what everything was. Lies, Lies, Lies.
He would never tell her that he was the one that shot her uncle in the head and posed it as suicide last Friday night. The old man was annoying, owed them money and refused to pay. Kept making excuses. But he would never tell her that. He would comfort her when she cried, attend his funeral, whatever else.
But there was something else.
