Hello my name is LeAnn Renken. I am a lifetime Parkersburg native. I work at Allen Hospital and Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer. I have 3 amazing children ages 7, 8, and 12. I enjoy working out, spending time with my family, and cleaning my house (no lie) in my freetime. I also have a bit of an addiction to binge watching tv series. It happens. We have a very busy lifestyle, and I absolutely adore the feeling of getting every second out of every day. I have been looking forward to the day when I could complete my education and become a nurse! I am so excited, and a bit nervous, to get started. I know it will be challenging to juggle everything, but I believe it will absolutely be worth it. I have the best support at home imaginable. This is going to be a great semester! Good luck everyone!

Hello! My name is Megan Hoskins, I grew up in Waverly and currently live in Waterloo. I graduated from Iowa State (Go Cyclones!) in 2007 with a bachelors in Community and Public Health Education and journeyed to Chicago for a couple years and eventually back to the Cedar Valley. Last year I left my job with the Black Hawk County Health Department after 7 years to start a new career in nursing! I've been married for almost 7 years, have 2 dogs Rex and Ruby (my actual first children!), and I also have a 3 year old daughter (who constantly keeps me on my toes), and our newest daughter, who is 4.5 month old (an complete opposite of her sister)! In my free time I enjoy sleeping because there isn't much of that going on in my life right now...spending times with friends and family and enjoying the outdoors. Some days I think I'm insane for taking the leap into a career in nursing, but I seriously can't wait to be a nurse! I'm a big fan of study groups, and I look forward to making 30+ new friends who in 2 years will probably become family :)

Hi my name is Megan Lahmann. I graduated from Tripoli last year and I am excited to start nursing school! My mom and grandma were nurses which inspired me to want to follow in their foot steps. I have three horses of my own Cookie, Lexie, and Obvi! We also have a miniature donkey named Whiskey and two other horses named Banner and Jackson. I spend my weekends in the summer and fall at horse shows with my mom! I have worked at Fareway for two years but I recently just accepted a job at the Sumner hospital as a CNA. I was very active in FFA, 4-H, and National Honor Society.

I enjoy the work that I do at the nursing home which brought me to have a passion for nursing. I have a 3 year daughter, I hope to one day follow my footsteps as well. We have 3 year generation of nursing in my family and I am esthetic to see if she will be the 4th. I hope to learn so much in nursing school and also enjoy these moments with my classmates. I'm also not blind to the amount of work and dedication it will take to succeed, But I know at the end it will be all worth it.

I 'v been taking college courses since my sophomore year of high school (graduated from Nashua-Plainfield), and am still determined to finish this program and become a Nurse like my mother, aka my inspiration to go into the program. I am currently a CNA at Western Homes here is Cedar Falls, and though I haven't been a CNA at Western Homes too long, I have been a CNA for a total of almost 2 years now. I live in CF with my one roommate/best friend and her dog, Stewart. Otherwise I often go back to Nashua to visit my Parents, Little sister, and 3 dogs (one of which belongs to me) Tubby, Luna, and Benedict. I really look forward to building a little (big) Nursing-Family with all of you!

After completion of training, I deployed to Afghanistan for 10 months then returned to Fort Hood, Texas where I spent the rest of my enlistment. In the summer of 2016, I moved back home and started attending classes at Hawkeye. I have a 4 year old daughter, a 2 year old daughter, and a 3 month old son. I've had a strong desire to get into nursing school with an end goal of working in the NICU ever since my oldest was there when she was born. Life has been crazy and chaotic but I'm excited to finally be starting the program and ready to get to know everyone along the way!

Hey everyone, my name is Trisha. I am excited to get to know everyone this semester and make some great friends! I am originally from southern Wisconsin. I moved here two years ago to help my sister with her two little girls, Ellie (5) and Maddie (2). I decided to stick around and started at Hawkeye last fall to pursue Nursing. This will be my fourth attempt at college, life just kept getting in the way before. I am not 100% what specialty I see myself thriving in so I am keeping an open mind. However, in a perfect world, I would love to become a Nurse Practioner specializing in pediatrics and/or oncology. I keep telling myself one degree at a time! I live with my best friend in the country just north of Waverly. I have a dog named Dallas, he is a yellow lab/pitbull mix and is the biggest baby. Between working as a CNA/CMA full time at a long term care facility and now school, I don't have much free time. The little time I do have I like to spend with my dog, friends, and family. I look forward to getting to know everyone and grow as a student and nursing professional.

Hello, my name is Gwen Mahloch, I live in Oelwein, IA. I am married and have two kids, which one is actually starting college as well, and my daughter is in kindergarten. The reason I decided to come Hawkeye was because of others that I work with encouraged me to come to Hawkeye. So I started the process, so here I am. My goal is to finish through with my RN and working in the field, my interests are in Med Surg and Labor and Delivery. The reason, for these two, is that I have done a job shadow with both and found both very interesting in the field. Now this could change as I go through the LPN and RN programs. Where I see myself? Well, this all depends on my husband and his career. He works with Kmart as a store manager and it all depends his situation. We may have to move after I finish school. I am hoping that everything goes well and go through this long journey and exciting as well.

Hi everyone, my name is Lori. I have lived in Waterloo for 25 years and have had various office jobs, with the most recent working in medical billing for 12 years. I did love the administrative side of healthcare, but always felt there was a component missing. I have tossed around the idea of becoming a nurse for many years. I originally started off at Hawkeye in the pre-Occupational Therapy Assistant Program, although decided to change my major to nursing last Spring semester. I have a 13 year old daughter and a 15 year old son, plus a dog, cat, and 2 birds. I work part-time in the Financial Aid office in a work study position. I am terrified of the next 2 years, although I have set a goal for myself to become a RN-BSN. I am glad to have gotten to know some of you previously and look forward to getting to know more of you! I know I am not alone in my feelings of confusion, stress, and anxiety! I hope we can get some study groups going soon also!

I am 30 years old, live with my boyfriend, two dogs and every other week we have his 16 year old daughter. I graduated in 2013 with a BS in Biology. Since graduating I have worked as a vet tech at a small clinic in Marion and for the last 4 years have been working for Unity Point Medlabs drawing blood and running in houses test at a family med and urgent care. I have thought about being nurse several different times in life and just have never done it and I finally decided it was what I wanted to do. In my free time I enjoy working out, running, kayaking, hanging out with friends and family, attending Iowa football games, cubs games and concerts. We as a family and friends group stay very busy. I am excited to start this semester and meet everyone and hopefully all support each other along the way and become great friends!

Hi everyone, my name is Hannah Southall. I am a CNA and currently work at Allen Hospital on their surgical floor. I am 21 years old, have an adorable pet bird Belle and got married this summer! I am originally from Eden Prairie, MN, and attended UNI for about a year for general education before I decided on nursing. I also used to run track and cross-country at UNI as well. I have been a CNA for about three years and my work in nursing homes, group homes, assisted livings, and now a hospital has helped me decide to pursue nursing. I absolutely love my job at Allen and hope to someday work on a Med-Surg floor as a nurse. I chose Hawkeye because I have heard good things about the program from others and want to work as an LPN and RN while pursuing my BSN. Hands-on learning is best for me and I wanted to attend a school that would allow me to have a good amount of work/clinical experience as I pursue my education. Outside of school and work, I enjoy running/lifting, reading, and spending time with my husband Dylan as well as friends and family. Look forward to meeting all of you!

I have worked at the same bank for about 5 years, but just recently switched out of the Audit department and cut back on my hours, anticipating that school is going to require more of my focus. It has been my goal since high school to work in the medical industry - my high school dream was to become an anesthesiologist (I love chemistry). I worked as a CNA in a Med-Surg unit for a while at St. Luke's in Cedar Rapids fresh out of high school as I was in college at Mount Mercy, but life ended up taking me on some detours. While I believe there was a reason for it all, I'm excited to finally be working toward becoming a nurse!

Hi everyone, my name is Jaci Donath (my first name is pronounced Jackie). I’m 38, have two degrees from UNI, and a previous career in forensic science. I lived in Kansas City, MO for several years and returned home to Iowa in 2016 to assist my parents. I’m excited to obtain my LPN (and eventually RN) at Hawkeye, and make some new friends and future colleagues in the process. I am interested in critical care, mental health, and women’s health, but am open to different specialties as I go through the program. I would really like to eventually become certified as a forensic nurse, and use some of the skills from my previous career. In my free time, I enjoy photography, gardening, reading, and riding horses. In addition to my two horses, I have a dog and several cats. Eventually, I want to get chickens as well. Looking forward to getting to know you all over the semester!

I currently am really interested in labor and delivery, but I also am intrigued by oncology and research. Things that I love to do outside of work and school include traveling, I have been fortunate enough to travel to Hawaii for a month at a time twice now and I can not wait to go back. You can say I'm a cat mom, I have two cats at home that I love to death. I am excited to get to know everyone!

Hi everyone, my name is Amber Dugan. I currently live in a small town called Volga with my boyfriend and one year old daughter. I currently work at MercyOne Elkader Medical Center full-time as a CNA. Trust me, after this semester I will no longer be full-time, but I am looking forward to paid maternity leave this summer. I actually graduated in July 2016 from Hawkeye Community College with my Paramedic, but life took a turn for me so I let it lapse. So, instead of going back to Paramedic schooling again I decided that I want to work in one specific specialty, cardiology, so here I am going to be a nurse. In my free time, I love to spend time with my daughter because she is growing up way too fast. When I am not doing that, my boyfriend and I go fishing whether it's ice fishing or in a boat we are usually doing one of the two. I can't wait to see where this semester takes us all and good luck to everyone!

I'm Kaity Klotzbach and I am so excited (and nervous) to be here!

I have worked as a certified birth and postpartum doula, bereavement doula, as well as a childbirth educator for the past 10 years through my full-service doula agency. Throughout the years of working alongside physicians, midwives, nurses, and other healthcare professionals my interest in the medical field has grown exponentially. With the encouragement of a local OBGYN practice I decided to expand my scope of practice and enter the very long to journey to becoming a certified nurse midwife (CNM). In order to get there I need to first start with nursing school. I have made the tough decision to stop accepting new doula clients while in school and may decide to close my agency altogether, but that has yet to be decided.

I plan to complete the ADN program and immediately after plan to pursue my BSN. Once I earn my BSN I will be applying to Frontier Nursing University inKentucky where I plan to complete my Masters in nurse midwifery as well as a post-grad certificate as a women's health nurse practitioner (WHNP). School will be my life for approximately the next seven years.

In the little free-time I have I love to spend time with my family and our friends/neighbors, and going to concerts. I love to spend time outdoors (kayaking, fishing, sitting around a bonfire, etc.) I also really enjoy traveling and seeking out new restaurants that offer safe gluten free food options in other cities and states that are not offered or hard to find in my area. I have celiac disease which means I cannot consume anything with gluten (wheat, barley, rye or anything that has been processed in a facility with those ingredients). If I do accidentally consume gluten, my body will trigger a nasty autoimmune response and will basically attack itself and I will become very sick for up to six months. I also have a dairy allergy so activities, events and situations revolving around food are very difficult for me at times. I bring food with me everywhere I go...#1 because I have to, and #2 because I love to eat!

On top of being a nursing student and a business owner, I am also a wife and a mom. My husband and I live in Independence and have five children (ages: 12, 9, 8, 6 and 22 months). My life is very busy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I am very organized and detail-oriented which is both my strength and my weakness, but I still believe that will help get me through this. In addition to that, my husband, family and friends are extremely supportive of my goals and the journey I am taking. I am so grateful for them, because without them I would not be able to do this.

I graduated with my health science degree from Hawkeye Community College in May 2018 and from there I transferred to Allen College and was enrolled in the accelerated BSN program. After spending a semester at Allen, I realized that it wasn’t the right place for me and then transferred back to Hawkeye Community College last summer. I chose to pursue nursing as a career because I enjoy helping other people and being there for those in some of their worst times. I currently work at MercyOne Waterloo (Covenant) as an aide in the Special Care Rehab unit and really love my job, patients, and coworkers. Also, I am a dog mom to the cutest, spunkiest Yorkiepoo, Puddin’.

In the next five years, I hope to have achieved and earned my BSN and be working as a registered nurse at Mayo in Rochester, Minnesota.

I wanted to be a nurse every since I was a little girl I've been a CNA since 2003 when I graduated high school. I have a learning disability so college is difficult for me, I've already dropped out twice this semester in my mind. After I was done with all my prerequisite I stopped going to school for a while out of fear of it being too hard and having to work with others and them knowing my biggest insecurities of not being able to spell. I suffer from generalized anxiety as well as social anxiety that has controlled my life but I'm working on that.

Hi everyone! My name is Aliyah. I live in Nashua, but grew up in Clarksville. It feels good to finally be in the nursing program! I tried a couple different majors before landing on nursing. I initially started at NIACC in the physical therapy program, after realizing I didn't like that I transferred to UNI for elementary education. After deciding I didn't like that either I completed my liberal arts degree here at Hawkeye.

I chose Hawkeye Community College because it is close to home and affordable. I have also heard good things about their nursing program, and it's always good to hear from someone who has experienced it first hand.

I work as a CNA and universal worker at the Clarksville nursing home and assisted living. I love it and my residents are what helped me decide to go into nursing. I just got married this past October! In my free time I like hanging out with my two dogs, Bonnie and Clyde. I also like to hang out with my friends and family. I enjoy golfing, kayaking, and camping. Pretty much just being outside!

In five years, I hope to be working somewhere as an RN. I am still undecided about continuing on to get my BSN. We will see where life takes me. I'm curious to see how that changes as I go through the clinical rotations.

I am excited to be on this journey with all of you!

Hello everybody! My name is Mady, I live in Independence with my fiancé. We got engaged Christmas 2018, it was by far the best Christmas present I've ever had. My true interests are being with my family as much as I can, I have a niece that is 16 months old so she's super fun to be with. I love everything home décor and design I'm on Pinterest at least once a day! My goals as a nursing student is to learn to be a nurse in all aspect; talk like a nurse, think like a nurse, and be a nurse. My goals when I become as a nurse or the nurse I want to be is warm, welcoming, and nurturing. I don't want my patients to ever feel uncomfortable, or catch bad energy from me. I started HCC when I was a junior in high school, taking classes online or at the Independence center. I decided to continue my education through HCC because it was comfortable to me and was paced at my speed. So technically I've been in school for 4 years. I see myself in five years finished with school, working as a nurse in Labor and Delivery, hopefully married, and moving into a house. Some pretty big goals in the next five years, but if I can get through this I think I'll be okay. I'm looking forward to getting to know more about all of you and growing some lifelong relationships!

My name is Julie Schwickerath. I live in New Hampton. I will be celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary to my wonderful husband Nate. We have 5 children, Kerstin 23, Hannah 20, Isaak 14, Noelle 12, and Jakob 9, two cats and a dog named Zeus. I'm a busy mom who loves to volunteer. My husband, daughter Kerstin, and myself are part of our worship team at church. I play the cajon, which you can look up if not familiar with. We love to play contemporary worship music and we host several youth conferences. My husband and I are cub scout leaders for our youngest son's den. I volunteer at a camp for abused kid's call Royal Family Kid's Camp. I'm very active in my church teaching Sunday school, children't church, and directing VBS, along with other activities. My husband and I also keep busy with several rental properties in New Hampton and Cedar Falls. I was on a women's pool league for 13 years and a traveling DJ in my early 20's. I love camping, crafting, gardening, painting, listening to live music, teaching women how to shoot, and going to my weekly Bible study.

I worked in health care back in the late 1990's as a CNA, CMA, and RA. I have always had a heart for helping others. Eventually my husband and I started a family, and he was off to law school. He took over his dad's law firm and I started working in his office. I was a main caregiver to my sister Becky for 4 years as she fought the disease of ALS. Taking care of people is very natural to me. 15 years later, I felt a calling from God to go back to school and follow my dream to be a nurse. I was 45. I took the plunge and checked out area schools. I choose HCC because I'm familiar with the Waterloo area, it was a smaller school, and I came to a MORE session with my daughter Hannah and loved it. The semester I started at HCC, my two oldest daughters were also coming to HCC. We loved leaving sticky notes on each others cars in the parking lot. I was nervous about coming back to school, but I believe that my life experience, my experience with 5 children, working as a CNA, and the many times when I took care of family members at the end of their lives, would help me through. I knew I was determined to do it. I have a goal to work as a wound care nurse when I finish my schooling. I'm fascinated with the body's process to heal. I look forward to creating memories with this class.

I am from Nashua, Iowa and currently work part-time at the Kwik Star in Nashua, and part-time at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly as a Medical Surgical Tech/CNA. I have been interested in going to the field of nursing ever since I was young. Many of my family members have a variety of health issues and I have always been interested in learning about them to help my family members feel better, also to prevent those things from happening to me. In my free time, I love spending time with family and friends. Summer time is my favorite, because my parents have a house along the lake in Nashua, so I love going boating and fishing! It is so relaxing!

I chose to come to Hawkeye Community College mainly for the well-known nursing program, but to also be able to afford to work and drive from Nashua, to school each day. My career goal is to earn my ADN here at HCC, then continue on to my BSN, online, through another University. My end goal is to be a specialized nurse (not sure what type yet), but for the next five years, I really want to stay local and continue working on a medical/surgical floor to better my overall skills. I am curious to see how my interests will change as we go through the program!

I look forward to getting to know all of you and to go through this journey of becoming nurses!

I'm from Jesup, Iowa and I plan on staying close to this are after graduation. My career goals are still unclear at this moment. I don't know which field/department of nursing I would like to enter into. In the next five years I plan to have graduated from college and move out on my own. I also plan to move and travel with my boyfriend, who I have been dating for over 6 years now.
